Ms. P is a 23-year-old female sees her primary care provider for a yearly physical. While she reports feeling “well,” she does admit to often feeling tired, cold, and now weighs 215 lbs (A gained of 15 lbs. over the past two months). She also admits extreme discomfort during her menstrual cycle which includes cramping, lower back pain, nausea, and increase in bowel movements, often resulting in her taking time off from work. After further testing she is diagnosed with primary dysmenorrhea. Additional blood work revealed her Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) level of 5.7 mU/L and a Thyroxine (T4) level of 35 ng/dL.
She is prescribed:
· Naproxen sodium – 500mg PO daily
· Ethinyl estradiol/norethindrone – 35mcg/0.5mg tablet for a 21-day cycle PO
· Levothyroxine sodium – 1.6 mcg/kg/day PO daily.
