Research Career Project
Audience: Your audience is viewers who are college educated and future students of
this career. How can you convince these future co-workers what will prepare them for
the field?
Context: Research and argue what it takes to be successful in this field. “Try to find specific, actionable advice, and research that backs up that advice” (So?derlund).
Purpose: Communicate what training or skills are needed to prepare for this field and why these are valuable. You don’t have to solve problems in the field, but create a thesis that argues what it takes to succeed in this career. Why should future students receive specific preparation or training?
Outcomes: Please “make deliberate choices about text structure, paragraphing, sentence
structure, word choice, citation conventions effectively for the situation”; and “create an inquiry
project that contributes to the scholarship on writing, rhetoric, and language/literacy and includes appropriate primary and secondary research” to review and revise for clarity.
The Research Process:
1. Primary research involves research that you complete and can include: Research on the field, and who would be a likely candidate to interview for primary research. For background, find and keep three–five articles (from the Discourse Synthesis OK) that demonstrate key research in the field. Do freewriting on your discoveries.
2. Arrange an interview and write a list of questions to use to conduct the interview. Submit the interview questions to the deepen activity.
3. Take good notes during the interview, observing the atmosphere of the work place and collecting a typical writing example from the expert, if possible.
The Writing Process:
Describe the interview, background information, a writing sample and your observations of the workplace. Citing and use examples from your interview research and a writing sample to support your claim. Then, explain the impact of the observation for those preparing for this field. Finally, offer a thesis on why future students need experiences or training related to those of the expert.

3. Uses research from an interview to support the claim. Address the relevant ethnography questions about the expert and their profession, mentioning how writing is used, along with other skills in the profession.
4. Explain what you learned in observing this workplace and what skills or habits you will need to succeed in this field. Connect your thesis to how you will need to develop to train for this field. Of course, define and explain career jargon or terminology.
Potential strategy: Exemplification is informative or expository writing that uses examples, often from a resource (interview, career study or writing).
