DQ1 Discussion 1: Membership in Professional Organizations

How can you move your career forward? Beyond participating in this MHA program, what other options will help you accomplish your short- and long-term career goals? What resources are available to you when you do want to make a career move? Joining professional organizations can be an invigorating way to learn about various aspects of health care administration and to network with others who are knowledgeable about the field.

To prepare for this Discussion, review the list of professional organizations in the Learning Resources. If you are an international student, research professional organizations in your country that may be a good fit for your interests.

Select one professional organization that you find particularly appealing. Visit the organization’s website and evaluate the resources that are available to the public and those that are available to members only. If possible, locate a job posting on the organization’s website that relates to your career interests.

Reflect on your career aspirations and think about the potential benefits of joining professional organizations. If you have been, or are currently, a member of a professional organization, reflect on your experiences and what you have gained through participation in the organization.

Post by Day 3 of Week 2 a cohesive response to the following:

Describe the professional organization you selected and the resources that are available to the public and to members only.

If possible, share a job posting featured on the website that you find compelling.

Explain how joining this organization, as well as other professional organizations, would benefit your career. Share any career-enhancing experiences you have had with professional organizations in the past.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

Respond by Day 5 of Week 2 to at least two of your colleagues’ postings, asking questions about the identified organization or providing information that could help your colleague discover specific benefits of joining professional organizations.

Continue the discussion until Day 7 of Week 2 by responding to questions and deepening the discourse on the topics addressed.

DQ2 Discussion 2: Mentoring and Coaching for Career Development

Plutarch once said, “The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” When it comes to business, our mentors are the ones who kindle that fire. They inspire us, help us through tough situations, and guide our paths

In career development, as in other aspects of life, there are many paths you can take to get where you aim to be. A mentor or business coach can help guide your path and facilitate your professional growth and development. Martin Zwilling, writing for Forbes magazine, distinguishes mentoring from coaching:

Expect a mentor to tell you what you need to hear, not like a friend who may tell you what you want to hear. A business coach is focused on helping you with generic skills, whereas a mentor’s aim is to teach you based on specific situations. The same person can’t be all of these. (Zwilling, 2014)

Working with a mentor or coach can help you make wise decisions and avoid some of the mistakes that may impede your progress. In this Discussion, you consider the potential benefits of mentoring or coaching for your professional development and examine the characteristics of each type of relationship. You also develop a plan for forming a relationship with a mentor or coach in the near future.
