Module 1 discussion

Email and Workplace Friction

In this module, we study email as a source of workplace friction. Think of an example from your own work (not personal) experience, in which some form of message created a conflict. Think of a single example, not several.

What do you believe created the conflict: choice of words, tone, format, or something else? If there were two or more factors, discuss their relative importance. How could the conflict have been avoided?

Support your analysis using the sources mentioned in the Case, SLP, or Background Info. Identify each source with an in-text citation. There’s no need to place the full reference at the bottom of your posting if the reference appears in the module; otherwise, it’s required.

Your analysis should be complete, concise, positive, and logical. You should use proper English; avoid slang, jargon, and Webspeak (e.g., typing “4” instead of “for”).

Please comment on your classmates’ postings using the criteria above. Your comments should be concise, relevant, positive, and constructive; further, they should advance the discussion. As in a face-to-face class discussion, you should “think before you speak.”

Discussion 1 Expectations

Respond to the request in an informed, rigorous, and professional manner. Your response should demonstrate an application of the concepts as well as a reflection of your personal experience.

Discussion General Expectations

In each discussion forum, students are expected to respond to the prompt by providing an informed, rigorous, and professional post. The initial post should be at least 150 or more words. In addition, students are required to respond at least 2 times to their classmates’ posts in a similarly informed, rigorous, and professional manner. Peer replies should be at least 100 or more words in order to qualify as substantive. Refer to the discussion rubric for more details.

Module 2 discussion

Lies and Their Consequences

Lying is a technique of persuasion. Sometimes it’s justified (e.g., wartime propaganda), sometimes it’s not.

Think of a time when somebody lied to you in your workplace. (Don’t think about the lies of family members, friends, celebrities, or politicians.) Describe the lie, what it was intended to accomplish, what it actually accomplished, and its other consequences. Be sure to mention, discuss, and prioritize all the factors involved; for example, the liar(s) may have had several goals, and there may have been several consequences. Offer a complete, concise, logical discussion, using proper English.

As before, you should support your analysis using the sources mentioned in the Case, SLP, or Background Info. Identify each source with an in-text citation. There’s no need to place the full reference at the bottom of your posting if the reference appears in the module: otherwise, it’s required.

Please comment on your classmates’ postings, using the criteria above. Your comments should be relevant, positive, and constructive; further, they should advance the discussion. As in a face-to-face class discussion, you should “think before you speak.”

Discussion 2 Expectations

Respond to the topic an informed, rigorous and professional manner. Your response should demonstrate an application of the concepts as well as a reflection of your personal experience.

Discussion General Expectations

In each discussion forum, students are expected to respond to the topic by providing an informed, rigorous, and professional post. These should be around 100-150 words. In addition, students are required to respond at least 3 times to your classmates’ posts in a similarly informed, rigorous and professional manner.

Module 3 discussion

Negative Messages

Think of a time when you had to write a negative letter, or when you received one – but not a letter having legal implications, such as terminating employment or threatening disciplinary action. Such a letter should not be discussed in this open forum.

What made the letter effective? What lessened its effectiveness? To what extent did it achieve the goal of conveying unpleasant news, while maintaining the recipient’s goodwill? Be sure to mention, and prioritize, all of the factors relevant to your analysis.

As before, you should support your analysis using the module sources, identifying each source with an in-text citation. There’s no need to place the full reference at the bottom of your posting if the reference appears in the module; otherwise, it’s required.

Your analysis should be complete, concise, and logical. You should use proper English; avoid slang, jargon, and Webspeak.

Please comment on your classmates’ postings using the criteria above. Your comments should be concise, logical, positive, and relevant to the discussion.

Discussion 3 Expectations

Respond to the topic in an informed, rigorous and professional manner. Your response should demonstrate an application of the concepts related to negative communication as well as a reflection of your personal experience.

Module 4 discussion

Giving Career Advice

You have received an email from a graduating student, the son or daughter of an acquaintance. This young person wants advice: How does he or she get a job like yours?

The student asks, “What do I have to do? What is the most important advice you can give me? Was there an element of luck in your career choice, and your success? If so, can you explain to me what it was?”

Compose the two or three paragraph reply. Be clear, concise, logical and effective. You are free to advise the student to either pursue your career, or to avoid it.

Following your reply, explain exactly you think it is effective. As before, you should make full use of the module sources, providing citations and references as necessary.

Your analysis of your own letter, like your analyses of your classmates’ letters, should be complete, concise, logical, relevant, positive and constructive. Be sure to use proper English.

Discussion 4 Expectations

Respond to the request in an informed, rigorous and professional manner. Your response should demonstrate an application of the concepts as well as a reflection of your personal experience. Since Module 4 is a cumulative Module, you may draw upon concepts from any of the preceding Modules.
