DQ1 Describe why you think nonprofits exist. Why do you think public administration exists? How does administration within these two sectors differ? Which do you think your personal skillset/personality is best suited for based on the differences in each sector? Explain why.

DQ2 Find or propose an example of cooperation within public administration. Why is the cooperation in your example necessary or important? How would public administration be affected without this type of cooperation?

DQ1 Describe what values of public administration are seen in current events today. Are these events significant? Why or why not. Give specific examples in your explanations.

DQ2 Choose a person you feel is the most significant to the history of public administration. Explain why this individual was so significant to the development of the field. How did he or she affect the evolution of the field?

Week 3 Discussion

DQ1 Explain in your own words the politics-administration dichotomy. Describe what you can infer about the dichotomy (ideas of practice vs. theory). Give examples to support the argument of your side/position.

DQ2 Is maintaining a balance of the politics-administration dichotomy important? What does, or might, happen if there is not a proper balance? What can public administrators do to maintain a good balance of the politics-administration dichotomy?

Week 4 Discussion

DQ1 Find an example of a nonprofit that appeals to you. What needs does this nonprofit fill that business and government do not fill? Is the nonprofit the best or most efficient way for those needs to be filled? Explain why. What is unique about the nonprofit that allows it to fill the needs the way it does?

DQ2 Identify a problem in society that could be addressed through a partnership between a nonprofit and a government. Why is it appropriate to address this problem with a partnership? Could this problem be addressed by one or the other? Explain why.

Week 5 Discussion

DQ1 Find an example of a successful public-private-nonprofit partnership. What has made this partnership successful? What did the different parties do to structure the partnership to help it be successful? What could future partnerships learn from the one you selected?

DQ2 How can you determine when a partnership is necessary? Give an example of a public-private-nonprofit partnership that is necessary and one that is not necessary. Explain why one is necessary, while the other is not.

Week 6 Discussion

DQ1 Citizen engagement in public administration is important. During the budget process what techniques/questions would you use to gain citizen engagement?

DQ2 Describe an issue a city would face (infrastructure, budgeting, self-driving cars). Discuss alternative solutions to that issue. Discuss why you believe the alternatives would be best for the problem. Include citations for your solutions.

Week 7 Discussion

DQ1 Reread the memo about fair housing. Explain how you serve the council even though their ideas might differ from the public good. Can you argue that serving the council’s decision is serving the public good?

DQ2 If you were the city manager in the situation from the first DQ. Would you implement the policy? Explain why. Discuss the challenges that might occur if someone did choose to implement the policy.

Week 8 Discussion

DQ1 You have a friend who has, on several occasions, expressed an extreme dislike for the government. Discuss how you would explain government/public service to your friend who dislikes government.

DQ2 Prepare a 30-second elevator speech on the merits of public administration. Post what you would say and explain why you would make the points you do. What would be your goal of giving such an elevator speech?
