Choose one (1) intervention scenario listed below that will serve as the topic for your Capstone Project in this course.

(a) In the past decade, headlines reporting the tragic stories of a young person’s suicide death linked in some way to bullying have become regrettably common. There is so much pain and suffering associated with each of these events, affecting individuals, families, communities and our society as a whole. There is an increasing national outcry to “do something” about the problem of bullying and suicide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other violence prevention partners are seeking ways to develop intervention programs in the public high schools aimed at sensitizing students, parents, faculty and staff to the risks of suicide and the “warning” signs of suicide in adolescents. Your task is to help develop an intervention program that helps involve students, parents, faculty and staff to identify the causes of bullying and prevent suicide among adolescents who are being bullied.

(b) The obesity epidemic has become a major health concern, especially with a three-fold increase in the last three decades among school-aged children (Office of Health Assessment and Epidemiology, 2011). In fact, many children in low socioeconomic household are growing up with fast-food as a staple food source in their diet that greatly contributes towards childhood obesity. Furthermore, childhood obesity has a direct correlation with adult obesity by further developing into various health issues (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute [NHLBI], 2013). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is seeking ways to develop intervention programs in the public elementary schools and the corresponding community around the public elementary schools aimed at sensitizing students, faculty, parents and staff to the problems of childhood obesity and promote both healthy food choices and exercise that is more physical. Your task is to help develop an intervention program that helps involve students, parents, faculty and staff to identify the causes of obesity, promote healthy food choices and increase physical exercise.

(c) Fearing for their careers, many military service members keep quiet about their mental health problems—and their silent suffering is taking a toll on our military readiness. A fifth of people returning from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are reporting symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder or major depression, and only about half seek treatment (Dingfelder, 2009). In addition to the human cost, the wave of service members with mental illness will cost the country about $6.2 billion in direct medical care and lost productivity in just the first two years after they return from deployment (Dingfelder, 2009). The Department of Defense is seeking ways to develop intervention programs aimed at military service members, military families, military officers and staff to the problems of not seeking treatment for psychological trauma such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Your task is to help develop an intervention program that helps involve military service members, military families, military officers and staff to identify the symptoms of psychological distress among military service members and help reduce the stigma of seeking mental health treatment among this population.

(d) If you prefer to address a real-world problem that would benefit from an psychology-based intervention program for a community or private organization, please describe that problem in your threaded response to be discussed and approved by the course instructor

In viewing the “Vaccine War” video, compare and contrast the different persuasion methods used by both sides of the vaccine debate (pro-vaccination and anti-vaccination) to support or spread their arguments to the general public. Based on all the articles and videos covered in this module, how can the media and technology can be used to shape the intervention program you are planning to develop?

(a) In the case of the anti-bullying and anti-suicide intervention, what is the role media and technology in promoting bullying and suicide? On the other hand, how can media and technology can be used to help inform parents, teachers and staff about bullying and suicide? What type of messages can be crafted and transmitted via media, technology to help prevent bullying, and suicide in a public high school setting? (b) In the case of the obesity prevention intervention, what is the role media and technology in promoting obesity, unhealthy eating and lack of physical exercise? On the other hand, how can media and technology can be used to help inform parents, teachers and staff about obesity and unhealthy eating? (c) In the case of the psychological treatment intervention for military service members, what is the role media, technology and military in promoting the stigma of having a psychological disorder and lacking the initiative to seek treatment? On the other hand, how can media and technology can be used to help military families, military officers and staff help identify the symptoms of psychological distress in military service members and help them seek psychological treatment? What type of messages can be crafted and transmitted via media and technology to help promote seeking psychological treatment within a military community setting?
