Hot Topic

Purpose

This assignment prompts you to identify and discuss current trends in professional nursing. You must search the Internet for “hot topics” that relate to nurses and nursing, and describe them to your classmates by posting to the discussion. You will also read your classmates’ contributions and select one to which you will post a commentary. This assignment provides an opportunity for you to understand your classmates’ viewpoints that may differ from your own.

Course Outcomes

CO 1: Consider the role of the professional nurse in relation to the concepts of integrity and ethical accountability within nursing practice. (PO 4, 6)

CO 2: Explore the impact of contemporary health care issues on the role of the professional nurse. (PO7)

Due Date

Hot Topic is to be posted in the discussion by Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. MT of Week 6, with your follow-up post to a classmate by Sunday, 11:59 p.m. MT at the end of Week 6.

The Hot Topic assignment is worth 200 points.

Directions

Review the types of topics that are covered in this course (i.e., professional, ethical, and legal issues).

Search the Internet for a current story related to one of the course topics. Topics may be ethical, legal, political, or professional in nature. The story must be no older than 1 year. Do not use wikis, Wikipedia, Facebook, or other social media. Instead, look for stories that may be found in, but not limited to, online news sites, professional organizations’ issues pages, or journal editorials.

Identify the name of the site you selected, its URL/web address, and your summary in the discussion. Indicate the date when the story was posted.

Write two to three well-developed paragraphs that summarize the main points of the story. Determine what issue is reflected in the story. Share your viewpoint about the story as it relates to nurses and the nursing profession. Make sure you review the grading criteria in the rubric. See Grading below.

Your hot topic must be posted by Wednesday, 11:59 p.m., MT of Week 6.

The second part of this assignment requires you to read about the hot topics that have been posted by your classmates.

Choose one topic of interest that is about an issue different from your own hot topic.

Visit the site using the URL your classmate provided, and review the story.

Post a comment about the story on the discussion as a reply to that classmate’s original post. Do not repeat the story, but add your own insights and opinions, which may differ from the opinions of your classmates. Remember to be respectful as you engage in meaningful dialogue. The due date for your comment post is Sunday, 11:59 p.m. MT of Week 6.
