DQ1 Gathering Accurate Information

With the advent of the Internet and electronic databases, patients have access to medical data and advice from many sources. Unfortunately, not all of these sources provide accurate information. As a nurse leader, part of your role will be to train your nurses so they can educate their patients about the appropriate use of information.

Remember, it is important to consider the information resources that different cultural groups will be likely to access, and to develop a training curriculum that assists your nurses in engaging with diverse patient beliefs and experiences.

What type of training would you design for your nurses?

What considerations would need to be included in the curriculum?

How will you train for cultural competence?

What are the consequences of patients accessing inaccurate information?

Provide at least one real-world example of patient misinformation having a negative effect on treatment. This can be an example from your practice setting or from research you have conducted.

What are at least three examples of Internet resources you would direct your nurses and their patients to utilize? How do you know these resources are reliable?

DQ2 Transitions of Care

The movement of patients through the various health care settings has become a topic of safety focusing on improving communication skills and providing accurate patient data to ensure patient safety and appropriate levels of care to help the patient reach positive health outcomes. The Joint Commission, in collaboration with other health care organizations, has developed technology programs to assist in these efforts. For this discussion:

Identify and discuss two specific aspects of care transition programs focused on the use of technology.

An example might be the transfer of a patient from inpatient care to a rehabilitation unit after cardiac surgery.

Discuss how these initiatives ensure patient safety, develop an organizational culture of safety, and meet standards of care.
