Mary Jenkins walks into Baker Grocery Store and proceeds to the produce section. Larry Thomas, a stock boy for the Grocery, accidently spills some water on the floor in the produce section while putting up some produce for sale. He fails to mop un the water on the floor.

Jenkins, not seeing the water on the floor, slips and falls. She breaks her ankle.

After a surgery that results in a $60,000 medical bill and a loss of wages totalling another $30, 000 due to being off work for 3 months, she sues Baker Grocery for he losses for negligence.

Week 5 discussion

This week, lets discuss some issues relating to employment law. We will start off with Title VII.

But we will also talk about the following fact pattern. Lets say James works for Acme Inc. He is a sales person. On his birthday, James meets fellow sales staff and the sales manager at a restaurnt. During the hour long lunch, James drinks 4 beers. As he is leaving the restaurant, James gets into a car accident, where he is at fault, and injures Sally. Sally suffers injuries totaling $100,000 in medical costs. And she loses another $40,000 in lost wages due to missing work.

Sally sues Acme Inc. due to James actions. Lets look at this suit from an employment law standard.

Week 6 discussion

Since we are running out of discussion time, I want to handle a couple of topics this week. I want to talk about busienss crimes and their implications, but I also want to talk about want to talke about Title VII and issues relating to workplace employment issues.

How have business-related crimes impacted the business community? What are some examples of business crimes we have seen in the media over the past 15 years?

Why do we have Title VII? What are some modern day workplace personnel issues that impact our work environment?
