1. Pick one of the happiest occasions (events) in your life for analysis. ***(Use this topic for my paper: “Study Oversea in US for university”, which I was doing now, but in this case you have to write it in sociologically.)*** This situation must be one that can be analyzed sociologically. The type of situation should be one that not only you have experienced or now experience, but other people in the society have experienced or now experience as well. The situation, you choose, may be unique for you, but it should be a situation that others could go through too. Your situation can be one that affected/affects you and a small group of people like your family or you and a large group of people like Johnson & Wales University or your country. State the situation in your paper title.
2. Describe the situation as objectively as possible. Provide the facts about the situation. You should do this in one paragraph.
3. Analyze the situation using the four different paradigms that we cover in this class: functionalist, conflict, symbolic interaction, and cultural materialism. Organize your analysis into four sections – one for each paradigm.
Functionalist: What are the functions and dysfunctions of this situation? Which of these is stronger? How are you, but also American society, helped or hurt by having members of the society, such as yourself, in such a situation?
Conflict: What is the competition behind this situation. What resource(s) are people competing over (tangible and/or intangible) in your situation? Who seems to be winning and who seems to be losing? How has the quest for resources and the struggle for power impacted you and shaped society at large based on what you find in your situation?
Symbolic interactionist: How do you and the other individuals involved in this situation think about the situation? How do these affect the social interactions of everyone involved in this situation? What do you learn about yourself and society from the symbols and interactions you find in your situation?
Cultural Materialism: How does the physical environment/setting affect the behavior of you and others in your situation?
4. Which of these paradigms helps you best understand the situation? That is, which paradigm makes the most sense to you?
