Conquering Fear and Ethical Problems

Use what you’ve learned this week to respond to the following:

Identify your biggest fear about public speaking. Develop a plan to gain confidence and overcome your fear, then explain how you’ll implement your plan.

What is your definition of “ethical public speaking”? Find an example online of a speech (or a speech excerpt) that violates ethical public speaking according to your definition. Share the link, summarize the ethical violation, and discuss how you’ll avoid this type of problem in your own public speaking.

Listening and Your First Speech

Use what you’ve learned this week to respond to the following:

Complete the Listening Self-Evaluation in The Art of Public Speaking, Ch. 3 pg. 54. Discuss why you were or weren’t surprised by the results. Identify three habits that you want to work on and share your plan for how to improve them.?

Find quality, credible advice to help you give your first recorded speech. (Make sure it is a different resource than one found by a classmate.) Provide a link to the resource and briefly summarize the advice. How do you plan to use this advice in your first speech??

Topic Selection and Audiences

Use what you’ve learned this week to respond to the following:

Share the topic and purpose statement you’ve developed for Assignment 2. Explain why this speech will be informative and relevant for your instructor and classmates.?

Comment on a classmate’s topic and purpose statement. Discuss why the speech will or will not be informative and relevant to you.

Source Evaluation and Effectiveness

Use what you’ve learned this week to respond to the following:

Answer this question: “What makes a high-quality source?”

Share a resource you intend to use in your informative speech. (Provide a link and / or upload a copy.)?

Share your speech topic and explain how this source will support your informative speech.?

Evaluate the effectiveness of a classmate’s source for their topic. Why is the source a good choice? Could another source better support the topic? If so, why??

Organization and Midterm Check In

Use what you’ve learned this week to respond to the following:

What organizational method will you use for your informative speech? Why did you choose that method?

At midterm, what has surprised you the most in this course? What would you change??

Oral communication skills develop over time. Where do you want your speaking skills to be by the end of this course? What goal do you want to achieve by Week 11??

What can you learn from these poor examples (both yours and those of classmates)?

What does “death by PowerPoint” mean to you? What are some best practices for effectively using visual aids?

Power of Persuasion

Use what you’ve learned this week to respond to the following:

Define persuasion. What makes someone persuasive? Give an example from your personal or professional life and explain how it is relevant.

Explain how you can use persuasive speaking in your current or future career.

Finish this sentence: “The most important thing to know about being persuasive is…” Then comment on a classmate’s response.

Week 9 discussion

A Speech for Every Occasion

Use what you’ve learned this week to respond to the following:

What makes a special occasion?

How can you apply, to special occasion speeches, the speaking skills you have worked on throughout the term?

Share a special occasion speech you gave or heard (or find a recorded one online and share the link). What made the speech effective? What can you apply from that experience to your own communication skillset?

Week 10 discussion

Tracking Your Improvement

Use what you’ve learned this week to respond to the following:

Go back to Week 2 and watch your first speech again. Use the online rubric to evaluate your first speech. Share your evaluation.

After you complete Assignment 4 and the self review, compare your evaluation to the one for Assignment 1. What skills improved the most?

When you review your self reviews of your speeches, do you notice any common themes? What does that say about the course and your own development?

Week 11 discussion

Reflect and Review

Use what you’ve learned this week to respond to the following:

Review your goal from the Week 5 Discussion. Remind your classmates of the goal and then discuss the progress you’ve made toward achieving it.

Set a new goal to work toward in terms of public speaking.
