NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY School of Nursing and Health Studies NURS 435 Gerontological Nursing Geriatric Syndrome Presentation Guidelines Purpose: The purpose of this project is to develop an evidence-based presentation on an identified geriatric syndrome. The student will research the literature and develop a PowerPoint presentation on nursing care of persons who have a designated geriatric syndrome. A list of Geriatric Syndromes is posted under Assignment Guidelines. Each student is required to choose 1 topic prior to the end of week 1. See course schedule for due dates. Only one student per topic is allowed. It is first come, first serve. Ø Presentation content: o Define the geriatric syndrome o Describe the impact (physical, emotional, social, financial, etc.) of the syndrome on the older adult and significant others. o Differentiate how setting/living arrangement influences pertinent aspects of the presentation. Include a community based setting (home, independent living, etc.) and an institutional setting (hospital, nursing home, etc.). o Identify other key influencing factors and characteristics of older adults living with this syndrome (e.g., risks, demographic characteristics, etc.). o Incorporate existing evidence-based practice (EBP) guidelines for nursing assessment, intervention and evaluation. Include research articles and journals to support this section. o Describe important and unique communication strategies to be used with older adults experiencing the syndrome. These should be patient centered. You may need to be innovative and creative depending on the syndrome. o Identify other health care team members you would need to collaborate with or coordinate care with in each specific setting. o Address safety considerations that are relevant to persons living with the syndrome. o Identify relevant quality of care indicators (i.e., outcomes). Be sure to understand the difference between patient outcomes and quality of care indicators. Include Healthy People 2020 Older Adult objectives that relate to your topic. o Include a reference list with a minimum of 3 references including the textbook, professional journals, research articles, etc. o Submit on Blackboard under the General Discussion board forum Geriatric Syndrome Presentations by the due date identified on the course schedule. Ø PowerPoint guidelines: o Maximum of 20 slides. The title and reference slides do not count toward the 20-slide maximum. o Should be easy to follow, readable and user friendly. Avoid including too much information on each slide. Professional appearance, correct grammar and spelling are expected. o Incorporate pictures, images or a video into your presentation. You may want to include a handout for older adults or caregivers and/or an educational handout for health care providers. o Include citations and references throughout the PowerPoint and a Reference list in APA format at the end of the presentation. o Include a minimum of 3 references including the textbook, professional journals, research articles, etc. o Submit on Blackboard under Assignments for Instructor feedback AND the General Discussion board, Geriatric Syndrome PowerPoint Presentation forum for students to view. Online discussions will cover content from the presentation material. See course schedule for due date. Geriatric Syndrome Presentation Grading Rubric: Addressed all requested content in the presentation: • Definition of the syndrome (5), • Impact of syndrome on older adult and significant others (5), • Influence of two different settings (5), • Other key influencing factors (5), • EBP in nursing assessment and interventions (10), • Unique communication strategies (5), • Key collaborating health care team members (5), • Safety considerations (5), • Quality of care indicators (i.e., outcomes) (5) 50 points PowerPoint presentation (maximum of 20 slides) is professional, easy to follow, includes images and citations 10 points Reference list adheres to APA format, minimum of 3 references including textbook 10 points Response to questions/comments on discussion board 5 points TOTAL 75 POINTS
