NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY School of Nursing and Health Studies NURS 435 Gerontological Nursing Older Adult Interview Assignment Guidelines Overview and Purpose The purpose of this assignment is to communicate with an older adult using an interview format. The student conducts the interview in the first weeks of the semester and analyzes the information learned during the interview. A formal written report and analysis of the interview will be submitted on the date identified in the course schedule. Guidelines for Interview 1. Develop an interview guide of at least 6 – 10 questions. Questions should address functional issues, health status, ADLs/IADLs, socialization, caregiving, and quality of life. You may select questions from the SAMPLE list at the end of these guidelines, and/or develop questions of your own. Please do not use the list entirely as listed. 2. Identify an older adult (65 years and older) to interview. This can be a family member, friend, or patient/client. Obtain verbal consent and indicate that this is for a class assignment and you will not use names or private information in your documentation of the interview. The interview must be conducted outside of a classroom or clinical experience. 3. Plan an interview of at least 30 minutes. Select a setting for the interview where privacy can be maintained. Be sure to conduct the interview in a professional manner, using Mr./Mrs./Ms. or the interviewee’s preferred name to address the person. 4. Use notes to document responses to the questions and to record observations related to the behaviors and mood of the older adult as questions are asked. Do NOT submit the documentation of the interview to the course professor. Protect your notes and the anonymity and confidentiality rights of the person you interviewed; destroy/shred them after your evaluated assignment is returned to you. 5. Write a formal paper outlining the content of the interview and analyzing the responses (see Paper Guidelines). Sample Interview Questions 1. Do you consider yourself old? At what ages (or stages) did you notice that you were getting older? 2. Do you consider yourself healthy? Please explain. 3. What do you do to maintain your health? 4. Do you have a chronic illness? How do you manage this illness (MD visits or other healthcare services, medications, diet, life style)? What is challenging to you in this management? 5. Do you have challenges with IADLs and/or ADLs? Which ones and what types of challenges? 6. What do you do to stay independent? What types of transportation do you use to maintain your activities? 7. What do you do for socialization and how often? 8. Are you a caregiver for another person? How does that affect your health and independence? Do you depend upon others to help you? Who helps you and how? 9. Have you ever experienced a negative attitude or discrimination because of your age? 10. Describe a recent interaction with the healthcare system. What advice would you give to healthcare providers (MDs, nurses, etc.) who provide services to older adults?
