Research paper requirements Topic Due Dec 14th at 2359 The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate an understanding of a current research topic and appropriate methods in the criminal justice field. Review the text and choose a criminal justice subject of interest for your research project. You will propose a topic area and provide a minimum of a 300-word statement as to the relevance of the topic in the criminal justice field and why the topic is important to you. Include citations for five (5) peer-reviewed journal articles published within the past 5 years, about your topic area, upon which you would like to build your project. Each journal article citation must be in APA format. Annotated bibliography Due Dec 21st at 2359 The annotated bibliography must follow APA format and must include at least 12–15 peer-reviewed resources closely related to your topic. Each journal article citation must be in APA format. Research Draft project due Jan 4th at 2359 The draft and final paper must follow APA format and need to be 12 to 15 double-spaced pages – this does not include cover page, table of contents, appendices, and references (you must have at least 12–15 credible sources—peer reviewed resources). Your research design is expected to be written so that if the research was executed, it would add new understanding to the existing body of knowledge on your topic. An analysis of existing literature on the topic alone will not suffice for your research design. Your research design should shed light on one or more aspects of your topic, discover new relationships between variable that were previously unknown by existing research, and/or provide new analysis not previously explored. Your Research Project Draft will count as of 10% of your final grade. The draft must follow APA format and need to be 12 to 15 double-spaced pages – this does not include cover page, table of contents, appendices, and references (you must have at least 12–15 credible sources—peer reviewed resources). All must be in APA format. You are to submit your Research Project Draft as a Word document. The Word document is to be uploaded to this assignment as an attachment. Please title your Research Project Draft by your last name and the word “RPD”. For example Charles Russo’s draft would be named “RussoRDP.docx” with “.docx” being the MS Word file extension. Your Research Project Draft will consist of the following sections/headings: • Title page • Abstract (100–120 words) • Introduction • Literature review • Hypothesis/problem statement • Research methods/design, including definitions, participants, data collection, etc.… • References • Appendices as needed Abstract: A brief paragraph (100–120 words) that summarizes what you want to research and why it is important. Introduction: Why are you exploring this topic? In this section, it is appropriate to use a few sources that are not from peer-reviewed journals. These may include mass media, television, newspaper, magazines, etc., information found on the Internet, books, etc. In addition, peer reviewed sources should also be used. This section is expected to be 250–750 words. This section should grab the reader’s attention, and explain the problem you want to explore. Would it inform policy? Might it lead to more safe conditions? Etc. Literature Review: This section contains only peer-reviewed research that is related to your particular topic. I want to make it very clear, you should choose a topic that has many peer reviewed research articles for you to use. Do not choose something abstract, vague or esoteric, where you cannot find anything. This is VERY important. Your instructor cannot help you if you get to Module 4 and you cannot find any peer-reviewed research. It is very important that you research this in advance using the Excelsior College Virtual Library. You have to make sure of this or you will struggle with the class. Peer reviewed research articles are those that appear in criminal justice, public policy or similar related journal articles that have passed a rigorous review process to validate the research contained in the article. The review process for these journals frequently begins when the journal forwards the research study to several researchers experienced with the topic, methods, etc. These researchers review the study for reliability and validity, bias, proper research policies and procedures, ethical treatment of research subjects, ethical practices of the researchers, etc. If all of these and other criteria are met, the study can then be published in that journal. I encourage you to ask the library for help if you are still confused. All the Excelsior College library staff is very helpful in this area. Most journals on the inside cover describe the submission process for researchers. This is where if you see what is described above. If so, the article has been peer reviewed. This process is what sets peer reviewed articles apart from those found in magazines, agency publications, books, etc. These journals can be found in the library. If trying to find these online, instead of the inside cover, you need to go to the journal’s web site and review the submission process to determine if it meets the criteria. On occasion a government document may be included in this section if, and only if, it is the premier publication on the topic. This section is expected to be very thorough and substantial. While there is no page expectation, all of the major peer-reviewed research should be related to your topic and a MINIMUM of 12-15 peer-reviewed articles discussed. This typically will be several pages and is to be in paragraph form and not in list form. There should be a smooth flow between articles and subtopics – much like you will find in published peer reviewed research articles. Do not turn in an annotated bibliography for this section. You need to talk about the literature in summary fashion and note why each article is important and what the findings suggest. In general the information is woven together and synthesized throughout your paper. You should read a couple of journal articles and note how they write their introduction and literature review. This will help guide you as you set yours up. Hypothesis: This is your research question (what you plan to measure/examine). Your research questions may be in paragraph form, but may also be presented in a bulleted list. Research questions must be individual questions that each measures only one item (one question = one measurement). A minimum of 3 questions are expected in this section and you should not exceed 5 questions. An example of a hypothesis is: · o If someone grows up in a poor neighborhood, then they will be more likely to be involved with crime than someone in a middle or upper class neighborhood. A research question might be: · o Do women who are educated about the prevalence of sexual assault take more precautions, and as a result be less likely to be victimized in this way (when compared to women less educated about the prevalence of sexual assault)? A statement like: “I want to study the frequency with which women are subject to a sexual assault” is NOT acceptable. It’s descriptive and not a hypothesis. Definitions: Terms that may have more than one meaning/interpretation must be clearly defined so a reader knows exactly what you are saying, asking, measuring, examining, etc. For example if using the term “law enforcement officer,” you must define this term. Does it include municipal officers, county deputies, state officers, federal officers, full time and/or part time officers, military police, masters-at-arms, all of the above, only some of the above, etc. Because of this, the term law enforcement officer must be defined. What are your important terms or variables? Define them! These are known as “operational definitions.” Research Methods/Design Section: Your research design is to be the “step by step” directions that would enable any researcher to replicate your research. Think of this as directions from how to get to point A to point B. This detail is necessary as it demonstrates that you understand how to best do your research. References: References are to be in APA format. If you have a citation in the body of your work you must have the appropriate reference in the reference section. Also if you have a reference in your reference section, you must have a citation from that work somewhere in the body of your work. The citations and references must match up. Final Project Due Jan 18th 2359 Your final project document needs to include a title page, abstract, introduction, literature review, hypothesis/problem statement, definitions, research design/methodology, subjects, references and appendices (if applicable).
