LAS432 Technology, Society, and Culture Week 1 Discussion DQ1 DEFINING ETHICS Class, to avoid having too many different discussions to keep track of this week, we’re combining the introductions and discussion of ethics into one topic. Begin your post by telling us a little bit about yourself, such as your major, expected graduation date, career goals, hobbies, family, and so on. Share only what you’re comfortable sharing. Next, let’s get into ethics. This week, the reading and lesson trace a number of ethical theories that we will encounter and explore this session. These include the following. Utilitarianism Deontology Ethical Intuitionism Virtue Ethics Ethical Non-Cognitivism Ethical Contractarianism These are discussed on page 6-8. Apply one of these theories to either Case 1: “The Trolley Problem” (p.9) or Case 2: “Environmental Ethics” (p.10). In your initial post (Wednesday or earlier), explain, in a well-developed paragraph of 100 words or so, how the ethical theory would guide your decision making. In your follow-up posts, respond to two or more of your fellow students in responses of approximately 100 words each as well. Be sure to participate each week on multiple days. Don’t copy and paste from the Internet–we want to know what you think, not what Google thinks DQ2 TOPIC AND SUBSECTION SELECTION This topic is only for students who did not attend class Monday. First, carefully read the Course Project Overview, especially the topics and subsections. Next, provide a top three list of topic choices. Finally, provide a top three list of sub-section choices. Based on your choices, I will do my utmost to assign you to a team and a section. Please make your post by Wednesday or earlier, so that I can form the teams by the end of the week. The earlier you post, the more likely you are to get your preferred topic and subsection.
