How are these tools useful?Respond to student postsKatelyn post Recently I’ve compared samples of home security systems.  I currently have a system (Guardian), this system came with my house when I bought it 2 years ago.  When I signed up I got a great deal for signing up, well so I thought.  With today’s technology my husband and I thought we should look into a newer more updated system.  One with touchscreen, color, camera, phone app.  I received a flyer in the mail to switch to ADT and receive free updated equipment with a discounted monthly rate.  Once I called I was told the monthly cost would be about $20 more a month as well as a $99 installation fee (that’s how they get you).  That’s when I made the chart below.  I ultimately found that while switching providers for the first month would be more expensive.  The ongoing monthly charge would offset that and I’d actually be saving money in the long run.   Brittany post This past friday I decided to take my 4 year old son to see the new Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom movie since he has been patiently waiting for it to come out. When I went to purchase tickets I found that I had 3 different ways to view the movie. Standard movie for $8.50 for my son, 3-D  for $12.00 and 3-D IMAX for $14.50. When making the decision I factored into it that 1, my son had never been to the movie theater before so I was unsure if he would even sit through the whole movie 2, if he would wear the glasses needed to watch it in 3-D and 3, would the IMAX version be to over whelming for him with his auditory sensory processing disorder. I opted for just watching the standard movie which was a success. He sat through the whole movie and was not scared or over stimulated. He had a blast. Shauna post The research article organizer tool was an effective way in parsing the various relevant information of the four articles discovered in my research this week.  The benefits of the tool are obvious, and appreciated, in that it provides a breakdown of all the key information contained within the articles that I had read for this week’s assignment. A tool like this not only was effective for this week’s assignment but I could see how this tool could be very helpful when it comes time to organize the numerous articles I will be required to organize in writing my dissertation.  Although the tool was of useful benefit in my attempt at organizing and summarizing the information from the four articles I found on the liberal education versus vocational debate, there was modifications I made to the tool to make it more useful to me.The trouble I often have in writing academic papers, is trying to organize and remember the key points of each research article. Trying to properly synthesizes and extrapolate the information from various sources is tricky but having it parsed into meaningful bits, like the tool attempts to do, makes very helpful. However, articles often several lines of inquiry of alternative points that divert from the main premise but still provide valuable insight. Useful data might very well be found in a study that, on the surface, might not have an obvious link to the subject one might be looking into. As such, I added sub-categories of the findings section to track any addition lines of discovery or findings that might be related to my search. All of my articles were primary exploring the same theme but if I was exploring several themes or lines of inquiry I probably would further modify the tool to allow me to do that for easy reference.Ashley post The Research Article Organizer tool is an extremely useful tool that helped me analyze, summarize, explore and understand my scholarly articles/documents more thoroughly and effectively. I did not think that it would take me long to complete my four articles using the tool, but it took me even longer than expected because the form’s layout/topics challenged me to truly figure out the answers and understand the why of them as well. This tool allowed me to put all of the most relevant information from all of the articles in one place; so that they are easily accessible. It also challenged me to make sure that I found articles that were relevant to our case study and how it pertains to the issues in higher education. Therefore, this organizer tool really helped me to think more precisely and critically, and it allowed me to establish a solid foundation to complete a literature review.I did not make many modifications to the tool because it is already in a pretty simple format. The theory section of the tool was very difficult for me to complete because it felt like I was intertwining the purpose and the problem descriptions into one. Even though it was difficult, it challenged me to thoroughly read through the research numerous times and figure out the actual theories to the best of my ability. Overall, this tool has greatly help me organize and identify key elements and information in my four articles that I can use effectively to complete the literature review. I will definitely continue to use this tool to help me organize and explore other articles and documents. Portfolios may be a folder very similar to collections of student work that many teachers have used for decades for reporting to parents. They may contain examples of papers that students have completed, as well as checklists, anecdotal records, summary reports for a grading period, and any other materials that students and teachers think are relevant to demonstrate the student’s performance (Morrison, 2013).”Natural learning environment is an appropriate of setting for the authentic assessment because “performance assessments are integrally related to instruction. The performance activity is a natural outcome of ongoing curriculum and instruction and not a separate, unrelated type of experience that is unfamiliar to the child. When using performance-based evaluation, the classroom teacher needs to know how to design appropriate, related assessment tools, interpret assessment results to understand the child’s progress and plan for further instruction, and interpret performance assessment results to parents and administrators (Adamson & Darling-Hammond, 2010).” I think that if the appropriate assessment is done in the classroom then it will benefit everyone including the child.The advantages of a portfolio would be that you are able to collect the child’s work this can be from art work, writing, or just them having free time. The disadvantages would have to be if the child doesn’t have work that day what do you collect and the other would be parents always want their child’s work so if that happens what will the teacher do.
