Some of the basic information a social worker can glean from the first interview is to find the clients “strengths, talents, successes, capabilities, weakness, lack of experience or information, negative attitudes, current problems that caused this individual to seek help, potential problems, and a sense of who this person is” (Summers, 2015, pg. 287). This information assists the case manager in selecting a possible program for referral by listing and has an accurate understanding of the client’s perception about themselves and their problems (Summers, 2015). The program is low risk for the client when both the case manager and the client work together to come up with an individual plan.5. The intake interview is an important step because it allows you to get an overall summary of the reason the person is working with you. Through this you are able to gather short facts and basic information about your client such as strengths, weaknesses, and a sense of who your client is. The basic information a social worker can gather from this interview can be strengths such as current problems as the reason why they are seeking help, capabilities, internal and external support systems, attitudes, as well as weaknesses of negative events that occurred in their life, and lack of experiences (Summers, 2016). The social worker can also view the person’s attitude and behavior to learn their current state of how they handle situations and learn about their viewpoint of the situation. From doing the intake interview the social worker can determine the current state of the person and see if they are the right candidate for the program, and they will be able to know if it will help in their treatment. The eligible criteria for a program to be low risk for the client they are often a part of the intervention procedure working with the social worker to develop a plan for their treatment. The social worker and client will work together collaboratively throughout this procedure so that the clients needs are met and the social worker fulfilled their job.
