FOLLOW DIRECTIONS OR I WILL DISPUTE MINIMUM OF 400 words for original forum Respond to both students separately with a minimum of 100 words eachoriginal forum -First page Chelsea response – second pagePaige Response – third page Original forum Review pages 8-10 (pages 29-31 if you have the digital copy of the text) and select one of the questions commonly asked by children.  (Who will take care of me when you die?) and a child-friendly (Child Life) response to that question.  Be careful to create a script guideline that offers open ended questions for the child, and to give only the information being asked for by the question.  This may change based on the child but when open ended questions are used, the child’s responses will guide our responses & additional open ended questions.Second, reflect on how easy or difficult answering the question was for you.  With open ended questions, does answering the child’s question make it easier or more challenging to separate your own feelings from those the child may be experiencing? Instructions: Your initial post should be at least 400 words. Student ResponseChelseaChild: Can dead person’s come alive again after they are dead? CLS: No, sadly when people die they do not come back to life.Child: oh.  Well in lion king, Mufasa’s daddy came and talked to him from a big cloud!  Will daddy come and talk to me too?CLS:  Now that daddy is dead, his body doesn’t work anymore.  He can’t talk, eat, sleep, walk, or see anymore.  He is no longer in any pain.Child:  Oh. Then what is daddy doing now that he is dead?CLS: What do you think he would be doing?Child:  I think he is playing football up in heaven in poppop! One of my favorite quotes in the text is “when we discuss death with our children openly, we allow them to live more freely” (Doka, 1995).  I think it is imperative to be honest with our children when discussing death.  When we are honest with children, they not only gain accurate, factual knowledge, but they also gain trust in you.  In my dialogue, the child struggled with the concept of irreversibility.  However, giving the child a direct answer, explaining death is permanent allows them to learn factual knowledge.  In addition, the dialogue portrayed the child having a misconception that dead people can talk to you.  It is common for young children to have magical thinking.  Having honest, open conversations with children about death allows adults to learn children’s misconceptions and refute these beliefs.  When writing this dialogue, what I found most difficult was articulating the information in a way that is honest yet not too blunt.  I tried my best to make it developmentally appropriate for a young child to understand.  Discussing death can be difficult.  I feared my answer may be too much and scare the child.  I found utilizing open-ended questions much easier.  When the child asked a question regarding afterlife, I had the CLS turn it around on the child, asking them what do YOU think they are doing now that they are dead.  Doing so allows the CLS to gain insight on the child’s beliefs.Doka, K. J. (Ed.). (1995). Children mourning, mourning children. Retrieved from https://ebookcentral-proquest-com.ezproxy2.apus.eduPaigeBelow I have written a script between a five-year-old and his mother discussing the passing of the child’s grandfather. Child: What kind of food does Grandpa eat up in Heaven? Mom: Grandpa went to Heaven because he died. When someone or something dies it means their body stops working and they no longer need food or water. Usually when someone or something does not die until they are very old, just like Grandpa was.Child: When will Grandpa come visit again?Mom: Well, since he is up in Heaven he can’t come visit anymore. When we die we do not come back to visit. Child: How do I talk to him?Mom: You can talk to him like how you talk to God. You pray to God and you can ask Him to tell your grandfather whatever you want to tell him. Your grandfather will not be able to talk back, just like when we talk to God we don’t hear Him talk back, but He hears us.Child: So when I pray to God, He will tell Grandfather whatever I want?Mom: Yes.This discussion board was quite difficult for me. It took me much longer to do than any other discussion board I’ve ever done. I had to put a lot more thought into it, because you can’t say anything to harsh, but you can’t beat around the bush about what death is. If all a child’s questions aren’t answered they’ll make up their own answers to the questions or will go asking their peers what it is. I wanted to explain death to the child like how I plan on explaining death to my children one day. In the future I want my children to know they can always talk to God and their loved ones up in Heaven through Him. I explained it to the child basing it on the fact that the child already knew what Heaven was. If I were a CCLS explaining death to a child I probably wouldn’t explain it the same way. You won’t always know what someone’s beliefs are so sometimes it’s best to not explain it religiously. Every situation explaining death is unique. A CCLS will explain death differently to a child than a mother or father will. Open ended questions are more useful in situations like this one. It really helps to explain every question a child has about a situation. I’ve never been in a situation like this before though so I am honestly not sure if answering open ended questions will make separating my feelings from the child’s feelings more difficult. I guess it all depends on what type of questions the child asks. Open ended questions can lead the conversation anywhere and it may lead to a conversation you do not want to have. It’s important to redirect the conversation if it gets to a topic the child is not ready to learn about yet.Walsh, K. (n.d.). Grief and Loss: Theories and Skill for the Helping Professions.
