The fact that child trauma goes unnoticed or unattended can cause problems and the out comes are never good, in fact once it gets worse things like suicide and drug abuse really start to take a toll on the children and more and more come to the same fate because of the lack of help. Even though there would be hardly any funding for such a program I think it would be something to try in many communities all over the United States. Where I live child suicide and drug abuse is very common. The problem here is no one cares because it is such a rural area and it is so bad, but no one seems to care as kids die daily from drugs and suicide. The truth of the matter is that no matter the cost it should be worth trying to do something to get these kids some help. After doing some research I found that some other areas are trying something like the Walla Walla Washington report, but it is only being done in the child welfare system and they are looking for ways to get it to go out in to other communities. The article talks about how much success the program has had since launch and how much the kids within the programs have improved in the time that they have been part of the program (Lang, Campbell, Shanley, Crusto, & Connell, 2016). There is no telling what good a program like this could do in community if it is already showing great success in such a small setting.ReferencesLang, J. M., Campbell, K., Shanley, P., Crusto, C. A., & Connell, C. M. (2016). Building capacity for trauma-informed care in the child welfare system: Initial results of a statewide implementation. Child Maltreat, 21(2), 113-124. doi:10.1177/1077559516635273 Second response:Are the programs depicted in the Walla Walla, WA article on trauma-informed schools something that can be replicated as a best practice in other places? Why or why not?I think this is a yes and no type answer to the question of whether the programs that were put into place at Walla Walla could work in other locations. For the program to work everyone must be properly educated and willing to participate 100%. In WA the population was approximately “30,000” (Stevens, 2012) people which is really small compared to major cities. Moreover, the population of the state I believe will play a huge roll in having the proper support needed to achieve the ultimate goal which is what is in the best interest of the child and the staff of the school. I think the reason Walla Walla was so successful is that they were able to get the children to understand that they really cared, and that school became a safe and kind of an escape from the realities at home. An article I found really broke down the program very well with excellent descriptions of what many of the troubled kids may or may not have to deal with at home. The article also made two key point’s to why the program worked at Lincoln High “Staff that embraces two basic concepts: toxic stress prevents kids from learning and moving from a punitive approach to a supportive, educational approach changes behavior. In addition, to the unconditional love that the teachers at Lincoln High show the kids on a regular basis.” (Stevens, 2012) The article also agrees with my point on that the staff must be willing to have an open mind to participate in this type of program. “If the staff is not ready, there’s no point in going in and trying to introduce the program.” (Stevens, 2012) One bad apple could have a negative effect on the outcome of the program hence why I said the programs could work in other states as long as everyone was willing to participate 100%.ReferencesStevens, J.
