If you have a thesis already, please state it in your introduction.Introduction – Brief Introduction to the Country, What is notable about Prison Practices in this country? End with your argument (thesis) about what the U.S. can learn from this country.- Denmark is a small Scandinavian country of about 5.5 million in northern Europe.- Danish prisons are frequently thought of as humane (Pratt 2008, Larson 2015). - Working thesis: The U.S. should emulate Denmark's practice of shorter sentences, open prisons, and self-catering, but it should be wary of Denmark's recent anti-immigrant attitudes that have led to the disproportionate incarceration of people born outside of Denmark. Description of Prison Conditions - What are the prisons like? Are they well-staffed? Are they under-funded? How many prisons are there in the country? How many people in the country are incarcerated? - In Denmark, there are three different types of prisons: closed, open, and remand. (Kriminalforsorgen 2019).- Conditions in Danish prisons vary tremendously depending on the type of facility. (Kriminalforsorgen 2019).- Principle of normalization, which states that prison conditions should be as similar as possible to conditions outside of the prison, has been very influential. (Kriminalforsorgen 1994).- People who are incarcerated cook for themselves. (Smoyer 2018, Kriminalforsorgen 2019).History of the country's prisons (this will necessarily include history of the country itself). In this section, you can also note if there were any indigenous forms of justice that were replaced with incarceration.- Denmark started using prisons for punishment in the early 1800s.- Their prison population exploded after WWII, when the country was faced with incarcerating the thousands of people who had collaborated with the Nazis during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. During this crisis, the Danish government found old camps and hospitals to use as 'open prisons,' prisons without fences or walls (Mathiassen 2016).- Most open prisons built walls and fences in 2006 (Mathiassen 2016). Politics surrounding Prison Policies - This will necessarily touch on the politics of the country. This may also overlap with the history section. Try not to be repetitive! In my example, I spoke about the opening of open prisons after WWII in Denmark, so I don't need to speak about it here as well, although it could definitely fall under the category of politics in Denmark.
