In this assignment, you will perform a job hazard analysis (JHA) to identify chemical exposures for a worker. When complete, you will recommend if air sampling is required or if the hazards can be mitigated by engineering or administrative controls. You must justify your answer. You will receive up to 10 points for each chemical evaluated in the processes below for a total of 30 points. Points will be awarded for thoroughness of information collected and for accuracy in determining the correct need for further sampling or just using controls. Assignment Requirements To begin this assignment, you will breakout into groups and begin to analyze the information below to create a JHA focused on chemical exposure. Additionally, you will need to add yourself to a group with all of the members in the breakout session. If you are unable to attend the lecture, you can turn in an assignment on your own. Using the questions asked in the Workplace Monitoring presentation you can begin to identify hazards within each process. Further analysis will include reviewing the SDSs and referencing the applicable standards. Once you have compiled enough information you will decide if air sampling is warranted, or if engineering and administrative controls will reduce exposures to a safe level. If you find that air sampling is recommended, provide all of the OSHA and NIOSH exposure limits and the recommended sampling methods. Submission Requirements One student in each group will submit the document representing the groups work. I recommend a google collaboration for ease of use. The document should include all important information gathered to make your decision and a synopsis of your conclusions. Scenario Details A person works in a metal plating facility. To prepare the parts, they must be dipped in a large bath of Sodium Cyanide. To accomplish this task, the person stacks parts on a rack that is lowered into a large tank of Sodium Cyanide. The water is maintained at room temperature and the tank is covered when not in use. After the parts are dipped, they hang above the tank to allow all excess bath solution to drip off. After the dripping has ceased, the parts are rinsed under running water over a containment area. Link to Sodium Cyanide SDS.The second step in the plating process requires parts to be dipped in a bath of Chromium IV (hexavalent chromium) and Sulfuric Acid. This process requires the worker to dip the part into a large bath of the mixture. An electric current runs through the bath to charge the parts and help fix the chromium IV onto the metal part. The parts are then removed from the tank allowing for the solution excess to drip off. Once the excess is gone, the parts must be rinsed with running water.
