Task #1 As many of you have seen, the United State terminated relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday. The WHO focuses on three main things:Universal health carePreventing and responding to emergenciesWell-being for allIt is important to note that WHO can make suggestions about best practices and how to address issues around healthcare and disease, however they do not have the governing power to impose laws. The lack of power in making recommendations mandatory has historically caused tension; WHO has a set of guidelines based on empirical evidence and best practices, but it is up to each member state to decide how to enforce those guidelines. There are currently 194 member stats, which pay mandatory contributions to belong to WHO. Additionally, states can make voluntary contributions. For example, in 2019, the US gave approximately $450 million to WHO and only 25% of that was a mandatory contribution. The WHO is also funded by private donors, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. However, the US is the biggest donor.
