Wiesel reveals characters in direct characterization form and tells the story in first person narrative. He thoroughly describes and makes you feel who they are as a person. What are some themes in the novel? How do they relate to the plot and characters? There are many themes throughout Wiesel’s Night. Love, death, power and corruption, survival, courage and heroism, prejudice and war of course. There were many instances where Eliezer showed profound love for his father. One of the greatest pieces of advice I thought was when an interrogating inmate told Elie to lie about him and his father’s age when they first arrived in Auschwitz so they could stick together. He took a big risk by doing that and could’ve been beaten or even thrown into the crematorium. Death was a constant during the Holocaust. Hitler’s prejudice was apparent and his power, crystal clear. The power he had over the guards and his captives was undeniable. Hence the millions who died under his ruling. Everyone feared him. Elie and the others starving and hungry showed great will to survive. As well as Elie walking through the forest for miles and miles with a bleeding foot showed his determination and courage to survive. What are some symbols in Night? How do they relate to the plot and characters? The title Night I believe is the first symbol. When I think of night, I think of darkness and emptiness. I think Elie saw it as God disappearing and that’s when more death and destruction would occur. Night brings more terror and fear. When Elie’s father was beaten again before he died, Elie went to sleep helpless with his father barely hanging on for life. By the time Elie woke, his father had passed. His father taken in the night and his space was filled by morning, or day light. Is Elie (Eliezer) consistent in his actions? Is he a fully developed character? Elie is very compassionate and caring. The love for his father was immeasurable and what he was willing to do to protect him was very noble. He even tried his best to teach him to march in step to no avail and then later even had his crown yanked from his mouth with a rusty spoon for his dad. He did have a moment of being inconsistent when his father was dying of Dysentery and the Blockalteste told him to stop giving his rations to his father because he was already dying. Elie considered not even trying to help keep him alive anymore but then felt guilty. Oher than a moment of guilt, Elie was very consistent.Do you find the characters likable? Are the characters in the story persons you would want to meet?I found the characters likeable. Moishe, Elie’s mentor was very interesting and full of knowledge. His awkwardness is something I can relate to so I feel a conversation would be easy with him. I also would’ve liked to meet Elie and his father (had he made it) to listen to them in further detail on how they made it through their years in camp together. There was also a patient when Elie was admitted to the hospital, (also referred to as the “faceless neighbor”) who said, “I have more faith in Hitler than in anyone else. He alone has kept his promises, all his promises, to the Jewish people.” His way of thinking made me wish I could’ve learned more about him.Would you recommend this novel to a friend? Please justify your answer! Yes. I would recommend Night to a friend. I found Wiesel’s tone to be very engaging. I loved reading his story. It was of course very sad but so inspirational, just as all stories are from survivors of the Holocaust. I felt like I was right there with Eliezer. As a mother, it also struck a lot of emotional chords for me. For instance, when the little boy was hung and suffocated slowly for over a half hour because he was so light weight. It made me tear up. It was also tough knowing Wiesel pretty much had to watch his father die and he was completely helpless. I can’t even imagine what that must be like. Also, Elie believing his sister and mother were burned to death and he didn’t even get to say goodbye. It was completely heart wrenching and one of the few books I didn’t get down about spending money for because I’d probably read it again.second:A) Elie Wiesel reveals character in Night by beginning the story with the describing his master, Moishe the Beadle, he called him “jack of all trades”. The story was during World War 2 in Romania. Elie was twelve years old. He also describes himself As curious boy when it came to religious matters. Elie talks about his father that he never spends time with him or any other siblings. However, one day he found him praying and because little boy didn’t had an answer why he was praying , his dad spend with him every day explaining to him about religion.B) The themes in the book are Family. At the beginning of the book, with nothing else to cling to, prisoners in the concentration camps hold on to their family members. Religion. Eliezer presents the Jewish faith in a moment of extreme darkness While Elie never really doubts that God exists, he wonders how God could allow something as awful as the Holocaust to happen. It’s the classic question of if God is good, then why is evil permitted existence. represents the never-ending darkness the people experience in these camps and how even though morning and sun come, it is still overshadowed by the constant darkness they are facing. Faith is another theme in this novel, Elie was absolutely terrifying because he had no idea where they going , but when they arrived to the first camp he felt a little relived. He had a lot of questions in his head about why these men are praying and blessing God’s name when God sees them struggling and at adversity and is not doing anything. He felt like God left them in teh bad place and not trying to save them, however little Elie never stopped believing in God. He believed that God still there taking care of him and his family.C) The first symbol was Fire appears throughout Night as a symbol of the Nazis’ cruel power. On the way to Auschwitz-Birkenau, Madame Schächter receives a vision of fire that serves as a premonition of the horror to come. Eliezer also sees the Nazis burning babies in a ditch. Most important, fire is the agent of destruction in the crematoria, where many meet their death at the hands of the Nazis. Night is also one of the symbols in the novel and it represents a world without God. God uses the Light to get rid of darkness and in this novel when Eliezer and his father arrive at their first camp, it is noncoincidental in the darkness of night. Fire is a symbolization of power. Darkness and night therefore symbolize a world without God’s presence. In Night, Wiesel exploits this allusion.Similarly, it is night when Eliezer first arrives at Birkenau/Auschwitz, and it is night—specifically “pitch darkness”—when the prisoners begin their horrible run from Buna.D) In my opinion Eliezer is more than just a traditional protagonist; his direct experience is the entire substance of Night. He tells his story in a highly subjective, first-person, autobiographical voice, and, as a result, we get an intimate, personal account of the Holocaust through direct descriptive language. Whereas many books about the Holocaust use a generalized historical or epic perspective to paint a broad picture of the period, Eliezer’s account is limited in scope but gives a personal perspective through which the reader receives a harrowingly intimate description of life under the Nazis. However i don’t think he is fully developed character just because of his age, he has a long way to go , but at the same time for his age he has seen a lot.E) I personally every single character from this story, just because the fact how they are so loyal to each other, they care for each other as well. In the beginning of the novel when everything went bad I could tell that they were like a family . however my favorite is of course Eliezer , i absolutely adore him because he never lost faith. For such an young age he was so strong and brave , his relationship with the inspires me , so if i ever could choose to meet someone from this novel that would be definitely EliezerF) I most definitely would recommend this novel to anyone! Because I think this teaching you so much and also inspires a lot too. Even take that part that a young boy went through a rough times, but he was not scared even once, he only prayed . Author take readers through a terrifying journey of what he went through the camps and the many struggles that he had to overcome through this journey. This is my first time reading a novel with this kind of theme and I absolutely loved it. This is was a sad story , but anyone who reads it will learn a lot.
