I am passionate about organ donation. If I could change anything relative to health, healthcare, or healthcare administration, it would be that more people accept organ donation and do not look at it as a bad thing to do. I would like this because of the shortage of organs compared to the people that need transplants is much higher than those willing to donate.
The problem that exists in my identified area would be the shortage of kidney donors, both altruistic and cadaver. This is something that I can tolerate researching for 10 weeks as I am a three time kidney recipient and love reading about anything that deals with organ donation in general. The problem is definitely researchable. The problem has easy answers but everyone??s view on organ donation is not the same unfortunately.
The purpose of conducting this potential research is to see how we can change people??s views on organ donation and get more people to donate in the end. This is important to increase the numbers of donors to match the number of people needing transplants. Others be interested to listen about the benefits of organ donation and ultimately decide to donate in the end.
My plan on completing my capstone is to research ideas on how to increase organ donation. Depending how I feel about my capstone in the end, I would consider submitting my work for publication once I graduate. I plan on staying on target by working and researching a little bit every day. I can rely on former transplant recipients and altruistic donors that I know personally, along with family and friends, for support if I need it.

As a veteran myself my passion and focus has been on the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DOD). The VA is one of the biggest health care systems in the country. There are many healthcare issues with the VA healthcare system and the DOD, and the stigma associated with mental health problems and the lack of care veterans are receiving for these services once they are discharged from the military. If I could change one problem, it would be the lack of support active duty and veterans are receiving.

There are many problems that exist with active duty military and veterans when it comes to mental health services and support. There has been changes in recent years and more resources for active military and veterans but why is there still an increase of suicides among this population? According to the Annual Suicide Report the rate of active duty suicides are still on the rise. This topic is something I can research for 10 weeks and would like to research the many problems associated with mental health in this population. I do feel like the VA and the DOD are making a lot of changes to address this problem and can be easily researched.
What is the purpose of conducting this potential research? Why is this important? Why would others be interested?
The purpose would be to reduce the rate of suicide among active duty and veteran population. There is no reason the suicide rate should be this high for those that fight for our country; they should receive the mental health support and resources without back lash or stigmas.

I feel like at the end of this class I may have a little more confidence to continue submitting my work. I only hope that the end of this class my work is strong enough to continue the research.
