Basic Expectations: Atleast 3 full pages with 6 sources. Observations that are based on at least 3articles from a professional mag AND academic journal NOT observations based on1 article from each.

Quotes vs. italics andcapitalization: Journal and mag titles=italics. Article titles=quotation marks.Capitalize all major words in titles.

Overview

Thisassignment will expose you to two types of professional sources in your field.You will research and make observations about the similarities and differencesbetween professional magazines and academic journals.  To do so, you willfirst have to find an academic journal in your field; since you already found aprofessional magazine for our first assignment, you already have that. You canaccess some journals online and also through KCC databases.  

Youmust read three articles from the prof mag and three from the academic journalbefore making your observations. Then, you will develop a claim regarding thesimilarities and the differences and ultimately write your paper to defend thisclaim using support from all of these articles.

Specifics (Include the headings below when you write thepaper)

I. Introduction: Introduce both publications (their titlesgo in italics) and state who the target audience is of each (you can researchthis; remember, it won’t be the general public. These are written for professionalsin certain fields.) There is no need to name all of the articles you will beusing in the paper at this time. End with your claim about the similarities andthe differences in the conventions.

 {For example: While both the English Teaching Professional magazineand College English journalare written for English instructors, its fairly evident that College English targetscollege professors based on the content, extensive research, and formalitywhereas, EnglishTeaching Professional targets high school and collegeinstructors who want practical advice on teaching.}

II. The Professional Magazine: Open thisparagraph by sharing your overall impression of the magazine: what kinds ofinformation is included in it and who specifically would be interested in, andbenefit from, this information? Also, provide the titles of the 3 articles youreviewed. Article titles should be in quotations marks and capitalize all majorwords in the title. 

Also, discuss the following: (NOTE: you dont need to answer thefollowing questions separately for each article. Instead, skim your 3 articlesand base your answers on all 3):

-Thecredentials/backgrounds of the authors of the articles, if provided.

-Theaverage length of the articles

-Typesof sources cited. Name some specific ones. 

-Anyvisuals included like graphs, charts, or images? Describe some specific ones.

-Howare the articles organized? Any section headings, for example?

-Toneof the writing (formal, informal).

-Providesome examples of any jargon used (terminology used in this profession).

-Anyother observations. 

III. The Academic Journal: Open thisparagraph by sharing your overall impression of the journal: what kinds ofinformation is included in it and who specifically would be interested in, andbenefit from, this information? Also, provide the titles of the 3 articles youreviewed. Article titles should be in quotations marks and capitalize all majorwords in the title. 

Also, discuss the following: (NOTE: you dont need to answer thefollowing questions separately for each article. Instead, skim your 3 articlesand base your answers on all 3):

IV. Conclusion: Discuss your personal impression of these publications. Asa future professional in this field, do you find either/both interesting?Helpful? Educational? If you were asked to contribute an article to one ofthem, what would you like to write about, AND in what way would that topic fitin with the purpose/content of the publication. Be as specific as possible.

Go to ,then to Library,then Research,then Research andSubject Guides, click on Writing and Journalism, andselect English1623 Journal Analysis Project. There, on the left handside, you will find various blue tabs that will advise you on choosing andaccessing journals (print versions, database versions, and onlineversions).  It also offers 3 way to contact a librarian for help: inperson, phone, and email.
