  • What are the roles and responsibilities of artists in creating representations of historical events or individuals?

The roles and responsibilities of artists in creating representations of historical events or individuals would be to really pay attention to their surroundings and what’s going on in the world around them and visibly express the emotions of the people in their art. Another artist’s role would be to reveal truths and help people view the world through art, a different perspective.

  • How does art have an effect on our ideas about historical events?

Art can affect our ideas by showing us various ways to view history and give us different opinions. It makes us wonder how it really was or how it felt in that time of history.

  • What types of markers of historical memory do you encounter in your everyday life?

I honestly haven’t passed any types of markers of historical memory. I work from home, and I honestly can’t think or remember anything I passed that’s historical. I will definitely keep an eye out when I am driving through town.

  • What memorials have you traveled to, and why are they meaningful to you?

I have not visited a memorial, but I will definitely look into the ones around me because it does sound interesting.
In some instances, a cultures present converges with its own past, resulting in conflicting ideas or practices.

  • How is this phenomenon visualized in sculptures and monuments in the US?                                                                                              It’s painted as it was seen in history as a story. Giving us moments of that time in history.
  • What other works can you cite in which ideas from the past and the present from the same culture have converged or collided?

When I sit here and think about the past and the present and the many things that have converged and collided, I can bring up many things after my research. Here is a work that I will cite, giving examples and information on converging and colliding from the same culture.

Simpson, T. (2015, April 13). How Convergence Culture Impacts Society. Medium. .

These are the two works of art that I have supported in this discussion.

Hello Bianca,
After reading your response I would have to agree with your point of view on the role and responsibilities of artist in creating the correct representations of the historical events. When I am viewing a piece of artwork or a sculpture, I take into consideration the time period this piece was created, where the location was and the background of the person who is creating the artwork or sculpture. After visiting the art museum, I really enjoyed seeing all the different artwork and getting to read the history of the artist. Once I learned we had to visit an art museum I honestly did not know what to expect. I started looking into different museums near where I lived and ended up visiting LACMA. I started to get nervous for some reason when it was getting closer to the visit date, but once my family and I went it gave me a whole different prospective on our history of art and the different cultures. I am excited to do more research for our upcoming essay and also whats in store for us the next couple of weeks in this course.

Hello Bianca,
The artwork from Frida Kahlo is a good example not just about how she felt about her time in America, but to give context to just how different the countries were at the time. The Frida Kahlo website states that, “Her face is poised for mischief, and, again in defiance of propriety, she holds a cigarette. She also holds a small Mexican flag, which tells us where her loyalties lie.”
Thank you for your post.

Hi Bianca,
I really enjoyed your post for this week’s discussion. For the first bullet point, I agree with you on the roles and responsibilities of artist in creating representations of historical events. I had a pretty similar answer and understanding of it. Also, art really has a strong effect on people about historical events. When I see a painting or sculpture or any type of artwork I try to understand how the artist viewed the events and I always think about how they felt when they were making their art. I really liked the images you provided for the discussion. I love Frida Kahlo and the work she created and shared with many people. I also really liked the other image that you shared, The Right to Know by Norman Rockwell. This class is really helping me better understand art and how to really understand the works of art that many artist are creating. Thank you for sharing your post and I hope everything goes smoothly for you in this class.
Thank You.

Hello Katrina,

The use of personal shines is something I see a lot of on the Highways of Colorado. People have taken the time to build everything from small wood shrines to solid metal crosses. These reminders have the same function as the memorials placed by lesser known battlefields to ensure the memory of what happened is not forgotten. Thank you for your post.

What are the roles and responsibilities of artists in creating representations of historical events or individuals?
Artists are vital to remembering our collective cultural history. The roles and responsibilities of artists in creating representations of historical events is to tell a story of a specific moment in time by recording the surroundings. The artist soaks in the atmosphere of a place or time and the memory of a feeling.
How does art have an effect on our ideas about historical events?
Art can affect our ideas about historical events through propaganda and persuasion. Propaganda is the deliberate, systematic attempt to shape perceptions, manipulate cognitions, and direct behavior to achieve a response that furthers the desired intent of the propagandist. Persuasion is interactive and attempts to satisfy the needs of both persuader and persuadee(Sachant et al., 2016). An example of this is artwork commissioned by Kings or other people in power to make them appear more powerful or heroic.

Societies use art to commemorate important individuals in their history or to memorialize significant events. What types of markers of historical memory do you encounter in your everyday life?
All over the last few years, there have been several high profile deaths of people that were important to Los Angeles. Because of my commute, I see murals all around Los Angeles memorializing Kobe Bryan, his daughter Gianna, and other murals of the rapper Nipsey Hussle. I alway pay attention to these commemorations, especially the ones for Kobe because there is an emotional attachment as a Laker fan and all of the joy Kobe brought to the city.

I have not traveled to any of the permanent memorials scattered throughout the country but I have visited makeshift memorials. They usually make me sad or even shed a tear because makeshift memorials usually follow a tragic event.

In some instances, a cultures present converges with its own past, resulting in conflicting ideas or practices. How is this phenomenon visualized in sculptures and monuments in the US?
Between 2009 and 2020 the phenomenon of converging cultures displayed with the removal of over one hundred confederate statues and monuments throughout the country. The erection of Confederate monuments during the early 20th century as part of the initiation of legally mandated segregation and widespread disenfranchisement across the US. Social activists have been trying to have Confederate statues and monuments removed for years. but the accelerated removal of statues was fueled by The widespread protests against systemic racism, white supremacy and police brutality following George Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020, accelerated the removal of the monuments.
What other works can you cite in which ideas from the past and the present from the same culture have converged or collided?
