In 2011, 6 professional associations in the United States issued a joint statement of core competencies for interprofessional collaborative practice. This statement, Interprofessional Education Collaborative Expert Panel (IECEP) can be found in the additional resources.  The panel’s framework separated 38 competencies into 4 domains: values/ethics, roles and responsibilities, communication, and teamwork.  The characteristics of effective teams are parallel to the specific expectations of individual members and are combinations of values, knowledge and skills.

  • Values are broad preferences concerning useful, worthy, and priority courses of action or outcomes. For example, “respect the other members of the team” emphasizes the understanding and acceptance of the value of respect.
  • Knowledge includes the key technical and contextual information, theories, and concepts to be competent. An example is the emphasis on the need for professionals to have knowledge of the potential contributions of the other professionals on the team.  
  • Skills are specific behavioral practices needed to be proficient in the workplace. “Communicating effectively” is a skill, however, those that exhibit effective communication likely benefit from underlying knowledge and values.

Instructions:

1. Using the values/ethics, roles and responsibilities, communication, and teamwork domains, describe the values, knowledge  and skills needed for your profession. Reflect on your personal areas of strengths as well as areas that need to be improved for you to be an ideal member of an interprofessional team. 

2. Review the 

 

 that you read in the Values and Ethics Module, and it’s many examples of teams and their purpose.  Choose one example and briefly describe how you could use your personal strengths to enhance the overall effectiveness of the team. 

 

3. Limit your submission to 500 words or less.
