1. For each topic/issue, identify and briefly describe some of the different viewpoints on the issue (i.e., about what aspects of the issue are people arguing?) you’ve chosen. Essentially, you want to briefly characterize the different perspectives on this issue and where they are in agreement/disagreement with one another (base this off of your own knowledge and a preview of your chosen sources).
Issue 1: Based on political events around the world, it seems that some governments have pushed out elections, consolidated power, and increased surveillance on populations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether or not to hold elections became a heated debate in many countries, and in some leaders attempted to extend turns and skip elections. Some countries increased centralized control of government and potentially have left systems in place that will allow more executive control during future crisis. Additionally, mitigation practices and technology designed to track disease exposure during the pandemic in some places allow for governments to more easily track its citizens through electronic location tracking. Alternatively, these changes could not be significant enough to represent a permanent change. In many countries, restrictions were effective at slowing the pandemic and emergency powers are no longer in place.
Issue 2: Fake News has been an increasingly common term in media for the last several years. Internet trolls push misinformation and disinformation on social media which seems to have blurred reality. Certain actors intentionally push disinformation in an attempt to undermine objective facts and erode trust in institutions. It seems like this has been effective in dividing the United States and allowed adversaries to push narratives that promote their ideals while undermining western democracy. Alternatively, intentional disinformation campaigns could represent a small amount of the misinformation spread on social media.
