    • When answering the question please put your own personal perspective on it– I don’t want to see “social-loafing” where a student reads another student’s post and writes their answer

    • The articles are short, and your answers should be thorough to that end each post should be at least 150 words and should result in meaningful content.
    • If you agree with a post let the person know by name that you agree with them and explain why you agree.

Additional Guidelines for Forum Posts

  • Participate in online discussion as you would in a constructive, face-to-face discussion. 
  • Postings should continue a conversation and provide avenues for additional continuous dialogue. Good posts should include:
    • What do you think?
    • What would you do?
    • What problem or challenge will follow the original question?
  • Do not post “I agree,” or similar statements without expanding the discussion with related examples, concepts, and experiences.
  • Stay on the topic of the thread- do no stray.
  • Indicate the main thought of your post in the subject line.
  • Do not just post a link to another document/source.  Provide a synopsis/highlight of the linked reference.  Incorporate quotations and include the reference and page numbers, etc.
  • Weave in your post related prior personal knowledge gained from experience, prior course work, discussions, or readings.
  • Do not post just to post.  Don’t repeat what has already been stated.  Be sure your post addresses a new opinion or thought not yet discussed.

Characteristics of quality online postings:

  • Substantial— posts should relate to the topic and provide information, opinions, or questions
  • Concise– messages should be clear.  Lengthy messages do not get many replies.
  • Provocative–prompts others to reply or object.
  • Explanatory–explore, explain, or expand on a concept or connection.
  • Timely–Participate/read the discussion board regularly and reply in a timely fashion.  Posting initial responses by Tuesday gives other students time to respond.
  • Logical–contains a clearly stated conclusion supported by premises, reason, and evidence.
  • Grammatical– good, clear, concise post free of typos and fragments (similar to the tone and manner you would use within a professional environment).  Do no use all caps.

Finally, do not forget that online communication lacks verbal cues.  Respond carefully, be clear, and keep your posts focused.

The article “Frederick Douglas on the Desire for Freedom” (1845) gives the reader insight into how a slave would feel with the knowledge of what slavery is and what freedom is. Frederick Douglas talks about how he was able to read and educated himself on what slavery is and what freedom can give a person. What I take from this article is how when a slave knows what they are a part of it makes them want freedom so much that it is the only thing that they can think about. Therefore, the insight into slavery that you get from this article is that it is something completely horrendous that no one would want to partake in.

In the “Letter by a Fugitive Slave,” the writer, Joseph Taper, tells how much better it is to live in Canada as oppose to living in the U.S. In Canada he’s not being hunted to be returned to be a slave and the monarchy is providing many resources. The Queen of England, he says, is giving to him and his family 50 acres of land and every two families can have a yoke of oxen and a plough. Taper also makes a remark that the southerners who wanted him in slavery will be persecuted by God, referring to a verse in the bible in the chapter of Malachi. His reference to the bible in his letter leads me to believe that in Canada he is able to freely express his religion without fear of being caught. One other thing Taper mentions is that his son who’s turning six is learning how to read, this is important to point out because it shows that the education in Canada, opposed to the U.S., is open to all settlers.

Solomon Northup writes about his experience being part of the slave trade in the United States. He writes in detail how horrific of a day it is when it’s time for the slave owners to sell slaves at the New Orleans slave market. What the audience can gather from his article “The New Orleans Slave Market” is the traumatic experiences slaves had in their lives. Northup talks about how the “keeper of the slave pen” treats the slaves like animals and how he whips them with no remorse. I find it ironic that the keeper’s name is Freeman because he deals with the selling of slaves. Slavery split up families and made innocent people endure such hard labor while making them feel worthless and like an animal. What puts this in perspective is when Northup descrbes how the slave buyers examine the slaves and have them open their mouths to see their teeth or take them to the back to see their bodies just like a person would when buying a horse.
