Starting Your Responses for Parts A1 and A2

In this part of the World History course, you look at the Crusades, which were a critical series of events in European and Middle Eastern history that have effects lasting right up to the modern day. Here are some suggested questions to help you think through your response. (Please note that the questions are just suggestions to get you thinking. You are in no way required to respond to each one!)

  • Part A1

      • What caused the start of the First Crusade?

      • What prompted Europeans to raise an army and march all the way to fight on another continent?

      • Why was it so important to them?

  • Part A2

      • What did the church do to convince Christians to go fight against the Turks?

      • How did they organize the effort? Did anyone make them promises?

      • Who actively rallied people to join the army?

Important Formatting Notes

      • Your responses need not be written as flowing essays. Simply answer each question on its own. Your answer can be very basicsimply a topic sentence, followed by support drawn from the text. You do not need formal introductions or conclusions.

      • Label each individual response for Task 3 before you submit the whole Task 3 set (Part A1, Part A2, Part B1, Part B2, Part C).

In this part of the World History course, you will be learning about the two early Islamic empires that formed in the Middle East and quickly became world powers. They had some significant differences between them, and these differences are key to understanding the foundation of much in Islamic and Middle Eastern history.

Watch this video to get a good overview of the founding of these dynasties and their time period.

Parts B1 and B2

There are two separate questions in Part B. Your responses for B1 and B2 are entirely separate from one another.

Remember that you are being asked to show differences between the Umayyad dynasty and the Abbasid dynasty, so be sure to keep your focus on things the two dynasties did differently from each other.

As you work through this section, you might find to be a helpful way to keep all of your information organized. You may use the prepared chart if you like, or you may create your own facsimile (see below).

Please note: This chart is a note-taking mechanism only. DO NOT submit this chart as part of your response to B1 or B2.

Starting Your Response to Parts B1 and B2

Here are some suggested questions and reminders to help you think through your response. (Please note that the questions are just suggestions to get you thinking. You are in no way required to respond to each one!)

  • Part B1

      • What different methods did each dynasty use to expand its empire?

      • Did one rely more heavily on its army? On its navy? On diplomacy? On trade? On bribery? On education? On inclusiveness (drawing more people into the empire)?

      • When you begin reading, be sure to check out the maps of expansion.

  • Part B2

      • The prompt for B2 asks about two different but related things. To respond, you will address both of these, one after the other. Your answer needs to address both of these subjects for both dynasties, incorporating a total of four key points.

      • The first subject concerns the differences between the the two dynasties’ religious policies, meaning the rules and approaches they adopted toward the religion of those they governed. Did these dynasties treat people differently, such as members of different branches of Islam differently? Members of other religions?

      • The second subject concerns the differences between each dynasty’s methods for organizing and administering their empires. Who could hold leadership positions? Did ethnicity, religion, or language play a role? Was one dynasty more inclusive than the other?

Part C:

Discuss the significance of the Silk Roads in facilitating one of these: the sharing of new technology, the growth of intercontinental trade, or the spread of epidemic diseases.

To answer Part C:

One- to three-paragraph short-answer response

Starting Your Response to Part C

In this section, you will be exploring the impact of the Silk Roads on the increasing connection between Europe and Asia. In your response, you will focus on only one of three ways the Silk Roads played a critical role in history.

Here are some suggestions to help you think through your response:

  • If you choose “the sharing of new technology,” think about where a technology originated, by what means it made its way along the Silk Roads, and what effect it had when it arrived in a new region.

  • If you choose “the growth of intercontinental trade,” think about what regions were connected by the Silk Roads, what goods were traded, and what effect that trade had on the regions involved.

  • If you choose “the spread of epidemic diseases,” think about at least one specific disease that was spread via the Silk Roads, by what means it actually traveled the Silk Roads, and what effect it had when it arrived in a new region.

Citations: No Fear!

Citations, which are addressed in Part D in this Task, are considered to be challenging by many students. But providing citations in this course is really very straightforward, which is why your course instructors recommend writing your responses to Parts A through C, then addressing citations as a final step.

Part D states:

    • Provide acknowledgement of source information, using in-text citations and references, for quoted, paraphrased, or summarized content. Include the following information when providing source references:

      • author

      • date

      • title

      • location of information (e.g., publisher, journal, or website URL)

Basic Citation Rules in Plain English

    • You gain credibility for your assertions by backing them up with published works. That is why finding and citing source material is important.

    • You cite the materialeither quoted or paraphrasedin two ways: using in-text citations and in a reference list at the end. You use both methods for all source material.

    • In the writing itself, you use in-text citations, which are short and simple. Two examples, one with a quote and one with a paraphrase:

            • Unlike the two big Mesopotamian rivers, “the Nile was calm and predictable” (Acrobatiq, 2017), allowing Egypt to grow more and different crops.

            • The Nile river was much calmer and more predictable than the Tigris and the Euphrates, so in Egypt, more and different crops were grown (Acrobatiq, 2017).

    • At the end of all your responses for this Task, dedicate a separate final page to your reference list. Provide full APA citations for each of your references, alphabetized by authors last name. For example:
