For this essay pretend you are the school counselor, and you are writing a letter presenting your best approach to this family. Mention in your letter your analysis and decision to this case based on the testimony of the child. Remember that as as a counselor you are a “mandated reporter” and you must document all that is occurring in John’s life.

The content of your letter (essay) should include the following five parts: heading, salutation, body (one paragraph per part for a total of three paragraphs), closing, and signature:

(1) Heading: In the heading you can use the college’s name and address as the elementary school.

(2) Salutation: The most common form of salutation is “Dear” followed by the recipient’s given name or title.

(3) Body: The body of this letter is “content” that I will be grading more heavily for this assignment. Here’s a breakdown of the three paragraphs for your review:

1st Paragraph – Reiterate the child’s testimony in a concise and coherent manner. Retell me (teacher) the story of John’s experience. You don’t have to be very graphic or descriptive.

2nd Paragraph – Explain in this letter why you had to call the child abuse hotline or if you took other legal action (calling the police, etc., child protective services, department of children and family services, etc.).

3rd Paragraph – Present your own interpretation and action as a counselor, including recommendations and perhaps other therapeutic intervention as a treatment plan to help this family.

(4) Closing: Some examples for closings are the following: “Attentively”, “Respectfully”, “Sincerely”, “Regards”, and other adequate remarks you would prefer.
