Introduction: This assignment builds off the Policy You Would Change activity you completed in Week 9.
Part 1: What is one domestic policy that you would change? Why?
Drug legalization is the US domestic policy that I would change if asked to change any. I would change this policy because if adjustments are made on drug legalization would likely lead to various amounts of prevention in America. If adjusted, drug legalization policy would help lower the crime rates in America by decriminalizing some drugs (Hammond, Dunn, & Strain, 2020). It can also help enhance people's health and improve the quality of life in inner cities. Additionally, some provoked drugs like marijuana have been proven to have medicinal value, whereby if the policy on drug legalization can be adjusted can also enhance our medicine. Mushrooms or marijuana can be used for medical purposes to help reduce anxiety and depression or pain in cancer patients.
A drug to be legalized must go through some steps (Bohigues, & Fernández-i-Marín, 2021). All the branches of government follow their procedure towards drug legalization. The factors considered in these steps are the one that determines if a drug will be legalized. In this case, I chose the legislative process and presidential executive action to explain procedures to follow in changing or adjusting a policy.
The legislative process: The first step involves sponsoring the bill by a representative. The second one involves evaluating the bill by the committee, where it is scheduled to be debated for and voted if it satisfies the committee. The bill is then moved to the House and Senate for approval if it is accepted and voted for after debate.
Presidential executive action: The bill is sent to the President after approval by the House and Senate. It is then signed into law by President if approved.
The public can influence the proposed policy change (drug legalization) by voting why the policy should be passed (Humphreys, & Shover, 2020). Another way can be through rallies to get attention from the authorities towards supporting drug legalization policy.
