Finding Music at home:

According to the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) at 4 to 8 months “musical awareness becomes more active” (Edwards, 2013).

Parents can tie a tiny ribbon with bells on the wrist or leg so that the baby creates music whenever they move.

At age 2 to 3 years “dance begins” (Edwards, 2013). This is a great time for parents to use music as a tool for promoting movement.

The homemade game ‘get up and move dice’ adapted from the website: Growing a Jeweled Rose provides parents with instructions on how to create 2 giant dice one with actions and the other with descriptions. Your child throws the dice then completes the actions. This is a great way to explore new movements and physical abilities.

Finding Music in our Community:

The website: Fun4OrlandoKids has a vast listing of community resources based on each county including:

· Central Florida Community Arts.

This program is for children 3 years and older it provides affordable lessons in music, dance and theater production to youth in the Orlando area.

· ACT III Music Lessons.

This studio is for children 6 and older and provides lessons in musical instruments, dancing and acting.

Finding Music in the Classroom

Music can be a very useful tool in the here are a few ways I would use music and movement in the classroom.

· Using counting and number songs to help with Math lessons (academic)

· Use music to help with transitions such as circle time and cleaning up. (classroom management)

· Create songs using books to help with literacy skills and vocabulary. (academic)

· Use songs for greetings and celebrations such as birthdays (building classroom community).

It helps with cognitive development. Music can be used in subject areas like math and Science that are more rigid and complex. “There is a connection between music and mathematical thinking” (Edwards, Bayless & Ramsey, 2010).

Movement affects physical development. It improves coordination as well as balance and help children explore their physical abilities.

Music is a great way to help children understand and regulate their feelings.

Music also helps children to express their creativity and expand their imaginations.

Why is music and movement important?

‘importance of music and movement in the classroom Music and movement in the Early Childhood Education classroom allows children to look at their day to day activities in new ways. Throughout their time in my classroom, we will be implementing music and movement in everything we do. From following instructions, to simply taking breaks throughout our lessons, they will learn a new passion for the world around them through music. We will be basing our lesson plans on the following National Content Standards for 4-year-olds. content standards · Singing and Playing Instruments · Creating Music · Responding to Music · Understanding Music Each of these individual standards are explained on the following page. Every standard is specifically important for the developmental stages of a young child’s life. Listed beneath each standard will be ways that we help children in the classroom and how you as a parent, can continue to do so in the home. responding to music Children will be able to recognize music and the different variations such as fast, slow, loud, and soft. In the classroom, we will use circle time to engage the children in song and dance. This activity will allow children to show what they know using their own voices and movement. creating music In the classroom, children will focus on creating music with their bodies and learning to produce small pieces of music to express their ideas. Outside, as well as inside the classroom, websites like PBS kids have interactive musical games such as, “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.” This age appropriate game can easily be used with parental help at home. http://pbskids.org/daniel/games/music-shop/ Community Resources Not only is music and movement important inside the classroom and at home, but it is also great to involve your children in clubs involving music. singing and Playing instruments In the classroom, I will provide many different instruments for the children to experiment with various sounds, pitches, and how each instrument can be used. Hand clapping games and chanting will be incorporated to help the children establish a beat. As a parent, at home, you can go over notes, different instruments you may have, and practice games that can help. Activity 2 for Parents: Parents can incorporate this standard in their home by practicing songs with their children while cleaning up, getting ready, etc. An age appropriate resource for children to communicate their basic understanding for music could be used with an application on any form of technology available.
