in early childhood settings, the social and emotional growth of children is greatly emphasized. It is typically valued to be as important as the academic curriculum.

Children who have strong social and emotional skills frequently have an easier time navigating social situations with peers, as well as adults. They have also often developed skills that can help them in many areas such as

· identifying and labeling feelings;

· recovering more independently/ quickly from intense emotion (resilience)

· self-regulating their emotions;

· self-control of selves and behavior

Children benefit from social and emotional curriculum and concepts to help them navigate their social and emotional world. There are many musical resources that help children learn about social and emotional skills. In addition to the skills above, social and emotional skills include the following:

· Greeting others

· Communicating with others

· Community building

· Active listening

· Assertiveness

· Calming strategies to deal with disappointment

· deep breaths,

· self-talk i.e. "Oh well", "maybe next time"

· mindfulness practices (i.e. yoga)

· Empathy (connecting to what another person and being able to step into their shoes)

· Controlling impulsivity

· Appropriate tone of voice

· Conflict resolution

· Matching the conversation and activity

· Joining a group appropriately

· Give and take/ turn taking with peers

· Ability to focus and attend

· Kindness to others

· Thankfulness

· Turn taking

· Manners

· Good sportsmanship

· Forgiveness
