We have learned quite a bit about the big business of American food in this class. This project is a bit of the reverse. A Jamaican-born American chef, Roy Darling, is looking for your help! A long-time chef has decided that he needs work-life balance and retired from the cooking world and opened up a spice business about 4 months ago. Currently he supplies two products, a rub seasoning and an all-purpose seasoning. He needs help in getting the word out about his product. As this is a small business, imagine that you have little to no money to market the business. What can you do to reach potential customers, how it can be done, and why it should be done the way you recommend. Social media is an easy answer, but how, in what way, how to make it spread, why this way for this type of business. It would be great if some singer would shoot a commercial, but obviously that is not possible, so be realistic. Another option could be local purveyors: supermarkets, specialty shops, etc., but why would these places want his spices on their shelves and how does he get them there? Maybe Google analytics?

There are many ways to go about marketing and sales of a small spice business. There is no right answer here. There may be several great realistic ideas that come from this. You may want to investigate what other small spice businesses do in your area? If possible, interview or talk to someone that has opened up a small business in the spice business or really any business to get an idea of what it is like. Feel free to reach out to Chef Roy himself if you want to know more about him to create a better story. It is also okay to be critical. You can certainly be critical but be able to back it up with a foundation from sources. Do not say, “ I do not like _____ because I think of _____”. There is no basis for that claim.
