By now, you should have uploaded three required elements to your Diversity Portfolio: your Who I Am video (Week 1), Statement of Anti-Racist Social Work Practice (Week 3), and Intersectionality Case Analysis (Week 7). The final required element is the Diversity Activity Presentation.

Cultural competence and cultural humility require lifelong learning and critical self-reflection. To be both culturally competent and humble, social workers must continue to learn about oppressed populations and challenge their normal way of thinking and viewing the world, to absorb others’ experiences and cultures. Recall the Week 2 Journal in which you identified a population of interest to you—perhaps one that you knew little about, or one that sparked discomfort.

For this Assignment, you enhance your knowledge of and exposure to that group by participating in a related cultural event, activity, or interview. You then create a PowerPoint presentation about this experience in which you reflect and analyze related concepts in the course.

To Prepare

  • Recall Week 2, in which you identified a population that prompted discomfort or a desire to learn more. Select one of the following activities related to that population: attend a cultural event, conduct an interview with a member of this population, attend a social work diversity discussion, or engage in safe zone training. As a guest at this experience, remember to take a stance of cultural humility and participate respectfully.
  • Afterward, reflect on the activity and to what extent the experience has influenced your perceptions of the population and diversity in general.

By Day 7

Prepare a narrated PowerPoint presentation on the diversity activity in which you participated. The presentation should be 5–7 slides in length (including the title and reference slides). In the presentation, be sure to:

  • Describe the activity and the associated population.
  • Explain how the activity has influenced your understanding, bias, or comfort level in working with the identified population.
  • More generally, explain how the activity has influenced your perceptions of diversity and difference.
  • Analyze at least three key concepts from this course in relation to this experience.

The PowerPoint should present bulleted text on the slides with a full transcript of the presentation in the notes section. Please use the Learning Resources to support your presentation. Include citations and a Reference slide to document the sources you have used.

Note: In addition to submitting the Presentation here, upload it to your Diversity Portfolio.

Bias and Self Awareness

My experience with taking the implicit bias test was different and felt a little awkward because I had to press a specific key on the keyboard and what I saw on the screen, so it threw me off a little. After completing the implicit bias test, I learned that I am not racially biased alone, and I had no automatic preference between Black and White people. Thus, I measured the strength of the relationship between different groups and their corresponding stereotypes towards a particular subject or group of people. This further offered a clear picture of how humans perceive those in their external groups. In my case, I took the Race Attitude Implicit Association Test. I decided to take this test because it offers an excellent opportunity to dive deeper into relationships concerning different concepts such as racial groups such as African American people and the LGBTQ+ community and allows room for evaluation between good and evil. Therefore, this confirmed my bias about why I prefer and feel comfortable working with specific groups and why I get anxious interacting or working with others.

The self-awareness theme that has prevailed throughout week one is an unconscious bias where people tend to have certain stereotypes towards other groups of people outside their circle of conscious awareness. Most of the time, these conscious awareness circles tend to be too stereotyped to limit the opportunity to enjoy the good and learn from the bad qualities of other groups.

For me, I am comfortable working together with all populations. However, as an African American heterosexual female, the only thing that scares me is where I have to work alongside groups or people who are not afraid to portray their hate towards African Americans. I would therefore feel at unease and would most probably fear my life. An example of these groups is the Kuklux Klan. However, in the future, I would like to study this group to determine how they function because the existing bias towards them is something that I have never experienced personally. Still, I have learned about them from my colleagues at school and work. Unconscious and conscious bias towards this group affects how I can interact with them. Therefore, getting an opportunity to learn about them personally will probably change my viewpoint towards them, and I can work with them to eradicate my current fear. I will also be able to learn about the measures I can take to improve my relationship with them in the future to avoid conflict of interest.
