Writing performance objectives is a great way to determine exactly what we want the learner to do and how. Objectives guide the rest of the design process; by pinpointing measurable objectives, we can build instructional materials that take learners through the actions necessary to satisfy those conditions. They act as a sort of road map for fleshing out the rest of the design. Performance objectives can also help us decide on the best assessment options for gauging whether learners are learning the material needed to meet the end goal of the instruction. I have also found that the trial-and-error process of drafting performance objectives has helped me to really narrow down what the most important outcomes are for my training design. Writing down a large list of performance objectives and then choosing the ones that are vital can help me to put the project in perspective. One of the performance objectives I am considering for my training is as follows:

Summarize the policies and procedures for socializing dogs with other animals and/or people.

This objective provides a specific action, “summarize the policies and procedures,” that learners will need to be able to perform to demonstrate their understanding of the knowledge they have acquired during the training. When learners can 0accomplish this objective, we will have proof that the instructional strategies for this portion of the program have been effective.
