The original attorney for Colin Ferguson, the Long Island Railroad mass killer, suggested that his actions were the result of “Black Rage.” One defense to a murder trial became known as the “Twinkie Defense” when a defendant offered as explanation for his violent rampage that he was on a sugar high from the night before when he had stayed up all night studying and had consumed a six-pack of Pepsi and a box of Twinkies. Recently several cases have relied on the defense of automatism or sleepwalking. One man drove 14 miles to his mother-in-law’s house and stabbed her five times, allegedly in his sleep! Christopher Pittman killed his grandparents and claimed he did it because of the use of the antidepressant Zoloft. “
