Social psychology is the scientific domain that attempts to interpret the nature and source of people’s behavior, emotions, and thoughts in social circumstances. Another definition is that social psychology explores the ways in which our thinking, emotions, and actions are determined by the social environments in which live—by other individuals or our thoughts about certain people. Social psychologists investigate how groups form people’s behavior, how culture becomes internalized and influences individual liking, and how our feelings and moods influence the decisions made by the individual. The concept of social psychology is based on how people interact with the rest of society. Within social psychology there is a study on how people react to other around them, society as a whole, and within their constructs of their environment. There is a need for social psychology because people interact differently around different people. Wilson, in 2022, identifies that the interaction between the society may be with the actual society or the perceived view of other people. How someone responds to something in a church setting may not be the same way they respond to the same thing in a school setting, or in the grocery store. Like such, people may also interact differently around their family than they do around their boss and coworkers. Being in different settings could yield to differing results and social psychology may help us understand these differences. In 2021, Powers notes that an important factor of social psychology is that it focus on human interactions within the groups they are embedded in. Social psychology is different than sociology in that sociology studies how groups interacts while social psychology studies the individual. In the study of sociology the focus is to identify how groups of people work within their society. Social psychology focuses on how singular individuals interact with the society. While psychology and social psychology both involve understanding an individual and their interactions, psychology looks at understanding all areas of the individuals life and social psychology only involves how they are influenced by society.

Research methods that are used to gain insight for questions within the field are, systematic observation and survey methods. Sociological social psychology employs a range of non-experimental methods such as surveys and fieldwork methods, including participant observation (Social Psychology, 2016). According to Branscombe (2016), One basic technique for studying social behavior involves systematic observation—carefully observing behavior as it occurs. Another technique that entails a form of systematic observation is known as the survey method (Branscombe, 2016). These techniques help the scientist find the elements they are seeking when it pertains to studies. Scientists and practitioners in other fields use the survey method to measure everything from life satisfaction around the globe to consumer reactions to new products (Branscombe, 2016). Empirical research is a way of acquiring knowledge by mean of indirect and direct experience or observation. It is build on knowledge rather than belief.
