Introduction
Correctional facilities are meant to be used as tools for rehabilitation and not merely intimidation.
Traditional correctional facilities were located in remote rural areas and designed using a one-size-fits all approach that ensured reflection of isolation and intimidation.
However, viable designs need to factor in the numerous variables contributing to successful rehabilitation, such as the location, political climate, emotional, and biological characteristics (Payne & Bryant, 2018).
The staffing levels of prison services should be sufficient; therefore, the correctional facility should carefully consider the prison population before formulating the design.
Introduction Cont.
Prisons in the past were plagued by overpopulation which resulted in riots and hindered proper rehabilitation.
The staff should also be well trained for them to uphold their professional and ethical requirements.
Modern day correctional facilities need to be designed to facilitate for rehabilitation rather than reflect punishment and isolation.
The correctional facility will be designed to ensure maximum security.
The prison will have perimeter walls that are topped with razor wire and the guard towers will be positioned in the corners of the prison perimeter to ensure there are no blind spots.
The facility will have heavy gates and the socializing yard will be surrounded by tall meshed wire and positioned in the middle of the guard towers (Jewkes, 2018).
The institution will have massive cell blocks that have steel-barricaded windows and sliding doors.
The correctional facility will hold less than a thousand inmates to ensure there is no overpopulation.
The cells will be organized along narrow corridors to prevent riots and the socialization yard will be equipped with a playing ground and a gym.
The staff need to be able to monitor the inmates and interact with them on a personal level to facilitate for rehabilitation.
There will be 24-hour surveillance by prison guards and CCTV cams and the shift change will occur every 12 hours to ensure the faculty staff are not too fatigued to monitor the inmates.
In addition, only staff who meet the set qualifications will be employed and orientation will occur periodically to reflect the progress of the inmates.
The staff will comprise of a chief deputy, five commanders, 129 corrections deputies, 18 sergeants, and four supporting staff.
The corrections facility staff will be organized into four squads for two separate shifts, four specialized units, and five specialized positions (Vandala, 2019).
The programs that will be offered at the facility are social services programs, comprehensive educational programs, pre-release rehabilitative programs, and treatment programs.
Conclusion
The architecture of correctional facilities is a significant contributing factor towards rehabilitation.
Other factors include the prison capacity, professionalism and ethics of the staff, and the programs offered by the faculty staff to the inmates.
The programs that are offered at the institution ensure cooperation and humane treatment of inmates thus preventing dissatisfaction which may develop to a full-scale riot.
Social workers should be open-minded when framing societal issues to gain in-depth knowledge that will enable them to implement effective strategies.
The prison population should be easily controllable and the facility staff should be able to interact with the inmates on a personal level.
