In Weeks 1–4, you observed and created field notes for each of the Walden Scholars of Change videos. Now that you have completed your observations, next you will select one of the Scholars of Change videos to begin the coding process of not only your field notes but also the transcript of the video you downloaded.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the chapters in the Saldaña text found in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Review the Introduction to Coding and From Content to Coding media programs in the Learning Resources.
  • Refer back to your observational field notes from the Scholars of Change Videos from Weeks 1–4.
  • Choose one of the four Scholars of Change videos and refer to your field notes from your observation.
  • Access the transcript you downloaded for the media program of the Scholars of Change video you selected for this Discussion.
  • Begin to code the transcript and the observational field notes of the Scholar of Change Video you chose. (Note: You will only need one or two codes for this Discussion, although more are acceptable.)

ASSIGNMENT

Post a brief description of the video you chose. Next, include an example of one or two codes and provide quotes from your notes or transcript to support your example. Finally, explain your reasoning for this coding.

Be sure to support your main post and response post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA style.

The scholar of change video is chose is week’s 2 scholar of change video 2 titled “Battling Addiction in the Heartland” by Jackie Kundert. Jackie introduced herself as a mother as well as a nurse in Monroe, Wisconsin. She went further by saying that Monroe, Wisconsin is part of Green county and that Monroe's population is approximately rough l10,000 people which therefore makes it the largest city in Green county. According to Kundert (2012), the issue of drug overdose in Monroe, Wisconsin became a major problem and popular across the nation during the past five to seven years. Kundert (2012) asserted that what used to be a big problem in big cities was felt in cities that were small and that the issue of drug overdoses, drug problem, drug abuse touches are tremendously especially that it hit home to her with her son being hooked up in the cycle of drug overdose. According to Kundert (2012), her son ended taking prescription pain medication, and as a result became very addicted to and which led him to start taking heroin.

Because Kundert wanted to be agent of social change after looking at a Wisconsin State Council of Alcohol and Drug Abuse map that showed the rate at which heroin was taken in Wisconsin, she therefore said to herself that she had to make a positive impact on this community.

Kundert was not the only one explaining the ordeal that her son had to deal with. Also, in the video, was a woman who explained how her son started with dope and then to cocaine and that cocaine led to her son’s death.

Because of the negative impact drug overdose, heroin and cocaine had in Monroe, Wisconsin, Kundert was prompted on in June 2015 to start an organization called F.A.I.T.H. According to Kundert (2012), F.A.I.T.H stands for fighting addiction it takes help.

As I begin to code, I took into consideration the definition Dr. Susan Marcus gave us. According to Dr. Marcus, coding is sort of a short phrase that symbolically assigns a summative, summary, salient or essence-capturing attribute for some portion of language or visual data.

The first code I chose to apply to this video is Social Responsibility.  In a direct quote from the video Jackie states, “When I saw those rates it spurred something in me that made me know that I had to somehow try and make a positive impact on this community.” (Kundert, 2012). I also chose this code because in my field notes I noted that drug addiction is an equal opportunity illness. It does not care who you are, how old you are, what your background is or where you live. Jackie lives in Monroe, Wisconsin and what she once thought was a big city problem made its way to her city, into her home. She is personally impacted and feels like she must do something about the problem not just for herself but for her community at large. Her second quote, “If someone could be inspired in every community across the nation to create change, together all of our small changes would make one huge change” (Kundert, 2012) also speaks to her accountability to be a catalyst for change.

The second code I chose to apply was Empowered. In a direct quote from the video, Jackie states “It has given me a base to gather data and empowered me to begin the process of getting valuable education to the entire community” (Kundert, 2012). I noted that same sense of empowerment in my field notes, but my attitudes, beliefs, and values did not impact this selection of code, the participant chose it herself (Saldana, 2016). Jackie describes her time at Walden as giving her confidence and empowering her to begin contributing to her community. In using this quote, as the researcher I did not have to interpret her meaning. Jackie’s own words explained her lived experience requiring no further analysis of the data (Ravitch & Carl, 2016).

The scholar of change video, I chose was in week 1 titled "Inspiring Children with Special Needs. Benjamin Isaac is a Walden University student pursuing a doctorate degree in the field of special education. He then explains that research shows that students with special learning needs who feel good about themselves perform better academically than those with low self-concept. I thought it was so interesting, how he created cartoon characters Skeeter, Buzz and Gigi.  He used these characters to inspire children with special needs that they can accomplish anything through the activities seen through the cartoon characters. I found, this particular video inspirational and has motivated me to look at how I do my research differently. His qualitative studies focused on the phenomenon “show was not to elicit sympathy from the masses, but to show children with special needs in a very normal light.”Furthermore, collecting and coding anonymously without ever knowing the participants’ names, and  using numerical or alphabetical coding systems to link data to participants’ names, then destroying the system at the end of the investigation.

The video I chose was the first-week video by Mr. Isaac. Mr. Isaac was a Walden University student working on his dissertation. The author created a video explaining his dissertation topic on changing how people look at special needs children. Thus, the author created cartoon characters with special needs. Consequently, the author used special needs children that he knew as the characters' voices but did not highlight their special needs.

Code description: children with special needs Code: AA1

Code definition: Study the children at home inside and outside of the home, interacting naturally with other children.

I identified the kids with disabilities and their challenges as the most considerable influence in my notes. The author had children with special needs, and that connected him to the research. Thus, the author wanted social change for the kids with disabilities through awareness of the cartoon characters' representation. The similarity of the kids having special needs characterizes them to one another (Saldana, 2016). The author did not use their special needs as a hindrance but portrayed them in normal light. Accordingly, the author did not change my opinion of the topic, but it has a strong potential to influence his target audience. The author created a theme in the presentation on similarities; however, the focus was on the individual's experiences (Ravitch & Carl, 2016). Also, I would have had some literature review on the effects of having special needs as a child. The author had the children in the video to highlight their physical similarity. Consequently, the author would benefit from highlighting the possible mental challenges amongst their peers.

The article I chose for this assignment was by Christin Topper, Brining the Natural World to Hong Kong.  Topper has discovered that there is a disconnect between children in Hong Kong and the natural world.  This disconnect, coined as nature deficit disorder, is due to the nature of the city with its skyscrapers and dense buildings taking up the areas previously used for parks or open areas.  This topic struck a chord with me as I have always enjoyed my time in the outdoors, camping, fishing, and hiking, and children not having this experience, to me, is troubling.  We all need to have the opportunity to experience nature in all its glory.

I coded three areas of interest to me with two codes each, Rubin & Rubin express that in the beginning, it is better to have multiple codes to prevent possibly losing information (p. 200) (2012).  The description of the situation as explained by Ms. Topper I coded as isolated and disconnected.  I felt these codes described the situation the children of Hong Kong were experiencing.  The portion of the video describing their rooftop gardening and its progression I coded as expanded consciousness and involvement.  The final codes I used were back to nature and reconnecting to describe the last part of the video talking about the initiative continuing and expanding.

The codes I used are due to a belief that we are all part of the same planet and if we separate ourselves as a community from other portions of our environment, those portions become unimportant.  The people of Hong Kong are in danger of separating themselves from their environment and possibly not considering these forgotten portions when making decisions.   When we forget to consider all possibilities we can make bad decisions that may not affect us now but that can negatively affect us in the future.

As

I

b

to

I

took

into

the

definition

Dr.

Susan

Marcus

gave

us.

According

to

Dr.

The

first

code

I

chose

to

apply

to

this

video

is

Social

Responsibility.

In

a

direct

quote

from

the

video

Jackie

states,

“When

I

saw

those

it

spurred

something

in

me

that

made

me

know

that

I

had

to

somehow

try

and

make

this

community.”

(Kundert,

2012).

I

also

chose

this

code

because

in

my

field

notes

I

noted

that

drug

addiction

is

an

equal

opportunity

illness.

It

does

not

care

who

you

are,

how

old

you

are,

what

your

background

is

or

where

you

live.

Jackie

lives

in

what

she

She

feels

like

she

must

the

problem

not

just

for

herself

but

for

her

community

Her

second

quo

te,

“If

also

Empowered.

Jackie

states

“It

(Kundert,

I

did

not

Jackie

describes

In
