Week 1 Discussion

After reading the article Nurses struggle to implement evidence-based practice, reflect on your experiences with evidence-based care. What barriers have you seen prevent nurses from implementing evidence-based practices? What strategies have been effective in removing those barriers?

Week 2 Discussion

This week’s textbook reading presented various nursing theories. Which nursing theorist do you most closely identify with and why? How has this individual impacted your personal nursing philosophy?

Week 3 Discussion

This week’s textbook reading presented ethics and legal issues in nursing. What ethical dilemma, encountered in your nursing experience, has affected you most? What have you learned from the situation?

Week 4 Discussion

Watch the video Health Determinants: A Framework for Reaching Health People 2020 Goals. Reflect on a patient experience where you encountered a health disparity that was a determinant to the patient’s health. In hindsight, was there an opportunity where you should have acted to help eliminate this but did not? Explain. What would you do differently next time you encounter a similar situation?

Week 5 Discussion

During this week’s textbook reading, we took a look at the dynamics of working in interprofessional teams. Reflect back on your experiences working with interprofessional teams. Is there a particular situation in which you should have spoken up for your patient, but did not? Explain. What kept you from speaking up?

Week 6 Discussion

After reading the article,Transforming and Improving Health Care through Meaningful Use of Health Information Technology, discuss how meaningful use of data from electronic health records can be used to improve population health. Have you seen connections between data collection gathered from electronic health records and how you care for patients? Finally, reflect on your nursing experiences to an incidence where the electronic health record improved patient outcomes. How was the electronic health record used to improve outcomes? What negative impact have you seen using the electronic health record?

Week 7 Discussion

The Institute of Medicine’s report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, addresses the need for nursing leadership; it discusses the potential for nursing to lead improvement and redesign the healthcare delivery system. Take a look at the video Transforming Care at the Bedside: Empowering Better Nursing Care to see what some nurses have done to improve healthcare in their facilities. Based on your nursing experience, what change would you like to implement to improve care? What are the first steps you would take to implement the change?

Week 8 Discussion

This week, reflect on all that you have accomplished in this course and throughout your program. Consider the following items for this week’s discussion, and discuss a minimum of two. You are welcome, and encouraged, to discuss as many as you like.

Do you think you will use the ePortfolio you created as a career tool or for other purposes? How can the ePortfolio support the professional goals you set?

How have you evolved as a nurse throughout the course of your studies? Were there any unexpected gains? Did you achieve all that you hoped you would when you began the program?

What challenges did you overcome during your studies? How did you rise above them?
