Good Faith Hospital has a patient that was dropped off by an unnamed friend. The patient was unconscious and overdosed on drugs when left in the ER. He had no identification, the hospital was only told his name was John Erin, and they are not sure this is a real or fictitious name. There is no person listed in the phone book by this name, the police have no record of him, and the hospital is unable to locate any record of family or friend. The patient has now been on the vent for 30 days and there is no chance of brain recovery. Because of the prognosis, the physicians would like to discontinue the vent. Since there are no known relatives, the ethical committee has been called in to make a decision to discontinue life support. You are a member of this committee. Using the Ethical Positioning System Model, discuss why you would or would not discontinue the vent on this patient. Be sure to use at least two nursing ethical principles in your example.
