Team Course Project Week 2,4,6,8

The Team Course Project will provide you with real-life, practical experience in creating a strategic staffing system for a position you select. This signature assignment is the cornerstone of your Course Project by putting you on a team that works in collaboration to compare each team member’s Course Project and approach and then conducting research covering all of the components needed to create a staffing strategy for organizations. The goal of this team project is to complete the following elements.

Develop a staffing system for an organization in which your team will select a job and analyze nine strategic staffing decisions for this job.

Develop a sourcing plan for the job and create a recruitment ad.

Develop a formal assessment plan.

Create an evaluation system to determine the effectiveness of the strategic staffing system.

Team

The class will be organized into teams of students. Week 1 will be all about team formation and selection of the focus of the Course Project. Each team will use this forum to share their Course Project development and compare the work of each team member as they develop their own Course Project throughout the course.

Note about teams: There should be no fewer than four students per team and no more than six teams per class.

If any team member is not contributing, the group should request the instructor to remove this team member and set him or her up individually if adjustments are not made. Each team member must participate in an assignment to receive credit. The teams can use the BigBlueButton collaboration for team coordination. The professor may monitor each student’s participation there and adjust grades according to the apparent participation by each student.

Weekly Deliverables

Each week, the team will apply concepts from the textbook and conduct some substantial research. In Weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8, the team will deliver an in-depth report in a Word document that contains substantial information and analysis. Accompanying this report in Weeks 3, 5, and 7 will be a Voice Thread or equivalent that provides a 5–10 minute summary of the report. All team members should submit the team paper in Weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8. Only one team member should create and submit a Voice Thread in Weeks 3, 5, and 7 for discussion in the Team Collaboration Discussion area.

Week 2: Your task for the first 2 weeks as a team is to select one job description listed below. The team will be using this job description throughout the Team Course Project to develop a strategic staffing system for this position. Then the team will create a short report explaining why the position you chose is strategic for the company. Describe the strategic context of your future proposal for recruiting and selecting this job.

Week 4: Develop a sourcing plan for the position you have chosen. Critically analyze the recruiting sources discussed in Chapter 6 and then recommend what recruiting sources to use to find qualified candidates for this position. Table 6.1 in Chapter 6 provides a number of external recruiting sources. Spend time as a team in deciding how and why these sources are effective. Then create a recruitment ad for the position that incorporates a realistic job preview that will attract qualified candidates. Decide where to place this ad: a newspaper, social media, job boards, search firm, college campuses, and so forth.

Week 6: Devise a series of assessment methods (interviews, assessment centers, work samples, simulations, etc.) for evaluating job candidates as part of a selection system. Use Table 9-3 in Chapter 9, which has comparisons of some commonly used external assessment methods. As the authors point out, this table summarizes the general effectiveness of many possible assessment methods used to predict on-the-job performance (validity), applicant reactions, the relative cost of the methods compared to other assessment methods, adverse impact, and ease of use.

Week 8: As a team, propose an evaluation system to assess the effectiveness of your recruitment and selection systems. Evaluate the staffing metrics in Chapter 13 and then decide which metrics to use to assess the staffing system you as a team created. How will you know if your new recruitment and selection system is working? Identify any potential barriers to the effective implementation of your recruitment and selection system and propose strategies for coping with them. Talk about how your line manager counterparts will be part of this evaluation system.

Week 8 Team PowerPoint Presentation

Each team will develop a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the four areas of the Team Course Project. This assignment is worth 100 points. This will be a Voice Thread presentation and will be submitted in the Week 8 Team Collaboration area.
