You are the director of an Associate-degree nursing program. There has been intense interest within the community to develop an RN-to-BSN degree completion program. What would be the first steps that you would take as you begin to explore this option? In addition to curriculum development, also address resources, anticipated positive and negative consequences, timeline, and so on.

OR

You are the director of an Associate-degree nursing program. In two years, you will be applying for re-accreditation with CCNE. Although there have been no major changes to the nursing program since initial accreditation 5 years ago, you must ensure that the program is aligned with the new Baccalaureate Essentials (AACN, 2008). Please describe how you would undertake this process of curriculum review, specifically addressing how you would garner faculty support and participation, develop faculty to participate meaningfully, and how you would manage resistance to this process.

How much influence should regulatory bodies, such as state boards of nursing, CCNE, and NLNAC have on curriculum development? To what extent should NCLEX pass rates of graduates dictate the need for curricular revision?

If you have been involved in curriculum development or revision, please share your experiences. Specifically, what leadership styles did you observe (or if you were the leader, what leadership style did you utilize)? Discuss the organization of the curriculum development/revision: who was involved, what was the committee structure, how did the decision-making and approval process proceed? How was work shared and credit given as appropriate? In retrospect, are there aspects of the curriculum development/revision process that could have been improved?

Consider your own community. If a nursing program exists in your community, discuss the external frame factors (as identified by Keating et al, Ch 5) that would need to be considered if they were to add a new degree program (i.e. RN-to-MSN, geriatric nurse practitioner tract). If no nursing program exists in your community, discuss the external frame factors that would need to be considered if one would consider opening a nursing program in your community.

In deliberating the introduction of a new DNP program at your institution, you have conducted an assessment of the internal frame factors as identified by Keating et al. (Ch 6). Of the five major internal frame factors, how would you prioritize findings from the assessment in terms of potential success for the proposed DNP program?
