DQ1 Water Quality, a Local and Global Issue

Various health risks surround water supply and water quality and there are often geographical differences in these risks. In this Discussion, you consider the environmental health implications of water for populations around the world, as well as the risks that come with recreational water use. Your Instructor uses the Module 4 Discussion Rubric to grade this Discussion.

Discussion Topic 1

Review the Belize media and discuss with your colleagues the challenges and successes with water quality or scarcity in developing countries as well as more developed countries. Some things you may consider as you discuss this topic: What are the most significant public health issues for water in developing countries? How do those issues differ from those in a developed country? What are some real examples of these issues and what is being done to overcome them? As Belize and other countries build their infrastructure, what can or should they incorporate into their development to retain a healthy water supply? How do socio-ecological factors influence educational interventions and solutions to water related problems?

Discuss with your colleagues a recreational water concern, such as polluted swimming beaches, watercraft hazards, or drowning. Some things you may consider as you discuss this topic: Provide an example of a specific recreational water use situation that has presented a public health problem and suggest possible prevention measures and solutions. How many people might be impacted by this problem and are there specific demographics associated with the risks? What are the challenges and barriers to implementing these solutions? Be sure to provide the supporting resources for the examples that you bring up.

Journal Article Critique: Injury, Disasters, and Hazards

By Day 3 of Week 8

Evaluate the article and provide a scholarly critique of the content. Your response must include the following:

Describe the public health significance of the study. Discuss whether the impact is local or global and what important public health gap might be filled by this article.

Critique the methodology. Support your analysis of how effective this methodology was and what might have been done differently to be more effective.

Interpret the results in your own words and explain whether you agree or disagree with the author’s interpretation.

Appraise whether the findings are actionable and if so, describe at least one action.

By Day 5 of Week 8

Respond to at least two peers’ postings and discuss the varying interpretations of the article. In your discussion, support your agreement or disagreement with your peers. Discuss with your colleagues what you believe is the social change impact of the finding. Follow up with your peers to dialogue and be responsive to each other’s ideas. You must use professional communication at all times and support your opinions.

By Day 3 of Week 9

Locate another research study on this same topic. In your posting:

Provide the full APA reference and compare and contrast the articles. Describe whether the findings support each other or are in contradiction.

Explain whether your opinions about the topic have changed in any way as a result of reviewing the second article and your peers opinions. Explain your response.

By Day 5 of Week 9

Respond to at least two peers’ postings and discuss the varying interpretations of this topic and these articles. In your discussion, support your agreement or disagreement with your peers.

From the perspective of a concerned community member, review the other teams’ presentations. Each individual must generate two thoughtful and in depth questions to ask of each of the other teams.

By Day 4 of Week 10

Each individual posts their two questions to another team in the Discussion Board area.

Review the questions that were posted from the concerned community to your team. Work in your team’s Town Hall Meeting Group Wiki area to fairly distribute the responsibility for answering the questions that were posted for your team. Your responses must relate back to and address the social change impact as outlined in your team presentation.

By Day 7 of Week 10

Each individual posts their two questions to a second team in the Discussion Board area.

Review the questions that were posted from the concerned community to your team. Work in your team’s Town Hall Meeting Group Wiki area to fairly distribute the responsibility for answering the questions that were posted for your team. Your responses must relate back to and address the social change impact as outlined in your team presentation.

Quality of the questions and responses matters. Each individual in the team must take responsibility for answering an equal/fair share of questions. In order to perform effectively on your interprofessional teams be sure to use your team’s wiki area and fairly divide questions so that all questions posted by Day 7 will receive a response. To do this effectively, your team must apply negotiation and mediation skills to address the organizational and community challenges. These negotiation and mediation discussions must be outlined in your group Wiki discussion area and titled Module 6: Negotiation and Mediation.

Module 3 Assignment

Air Quality Control & Protection Paper

For this assignment, you will prepare a paper on the environmental health functions and public health responsibilities related to an air quality control and protection scenario provided by your professor. If you do not receive your scenario within 14 days of the assignment deadline, be sure to ask your instructor.

As you prepare your paper, think about your role as current or future public health professional and how you might address the scenario. Consider the responsibilities and services you may be called upon to carry out for the community. Review the Learning Resources provided in this module and any other quality, relevant public health or academic resources, and think about how the core functions and essential services of public health are related to this public health air quality event. Visit the Walden writing center and review your Essential Guide to APA style for writing assistance.

Your paper must include the following:

To Prepare: Review the Learning Resources and the scenario the instructor provided you for this module. Think about your role as current or future environmental health/ public health professional and how you might address the scenario to effect positive social change. Also, think about the responsibilities and services you may be called upon to carry out for the community.

To Complete: Submit a 5-8-page paper addressing the topic you were provided.

Your paper must include the following:

A title page, in APA format.

Section headers, in APA format, for each section below:

Describe the air quality incident and highlight the unique attributes of this situation and why it is a public health concern. Explain the situational background and why a public health response would be warranted.

Describe the potential human health effects of this incident, taking into account the unique environmental health factors that influence exposure. What challenges/barriers can you expect to face given this information?

Analyze the core public health roles and responsibilities in responding to the event and how local, state and federal public health agencies may work together in controlling the air quality incident. Also, what other resources and/or partnerships may be needed to respond to this incident?

Describe the specific public health and community protection procedures that you feel will best protect the community and why? Make sure to discuss at minimum, incident investigation, exposure assessment, hazard containment, and public information dissemination.

Provide a summary/conclusion adequately closing the paper and finalizing your thoughts on how these measures contribute to positive social change.

Cite the sources within your text and be sure to follow APA format.
