I believe that our consciousness resides in our nervous system somewhere because of what can contribute to altering it. Things like sleep, alcohol, certain drugs, and chemicals all go through our nervous system. The quote that sticks out to me is consciousness was likened to a car’s speedometer: “It doesn’t make the car go, it just reflects what’s happening” (Seligman, 1991, p. 24). This makes sense to me and is why I believe it is in the central nervous system possibly the frontal lobe of our brain. I think that the frontal lobe is the most important part of the brain when it comes to decision making, empathy, forming personality, and even speaking – which plays a part in our consciousness (Villines, 2017). I also think that our brain can be aware of something that we are not conscious of – at least initially. What I mean is, I believe that a lot of information is buried in our conscious that is not brought to the surface until we need it there. When it is buried there – we are not “aware” of it – but because our brain and our conscious work hand in hand, or even possibly the same thing altogether, it is always known deep down in our brain or conscious. I have this thought because I have read of scenarios where people repress information for their brain to protect them. I do not think there is any evidence that this is true only because scientists are still trying to decide what the conscious does and is involved, but I do not think it is that far off base to think that our brain can withhold something in order to protect us.Villines, Z.
