Such forms of therapy found effective for the treatment of a variety of diagnoses include art therapy, activity therapy etc. Specifically, music therapy has been a newer advancement in the realm of CAM’s which has shown great promise in treating diagnoses such as depression, anxiety and the like. As these treatments are gaining popularity the prevalence of substance abuse has become of epic proportion. Many individuals diagnosed with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) will also suffer from co-occurring conditions such as depression. These same individuals appear to not respond to man traditional substance abuse therapies which is why CAMs are currently being explored as a way to increase motivation and as an alternative to traditional treatment modalities. Certain studies have shown that music therapy can act as an effective treatment on its own or coupled with a traditional approach, such as contingent therapy. While these findings are promising it is important to notes that these studies are usually conducted with researcher made instruments which have not been evidenced as valid or reliable and the sties that have established some degree of effective did so utilizing clinical interviews and parameters of depression and not self-inventory of the experience of the client. This outcome study is intended to establish the efficacy of music therapy as an effective treatment of co-occurring depression utilizing a valid and reliable self-inventory instrument ( Hamilton Depression Inventory).
