Note: To view an example of a Parent PowerPoint presentation created by me, scroll to the bottom of the instructions. This is a partial example of the project to get you started. Each slide has instructions included that reflect the rubric.Begin: Design a PowerPoint to present to parents of preschool children at a workshop during a parent meeting. You will create a PowerPoint that will help parents understand the importance of providing nutritious meals to their children. Create this presentation as if you are teaching at a preschool. Some of you already teach and other classmates hope to teach soon. At the end of this assignment, you will have a great PowerPoint presentation you can use one day at your preschool. Your presentation will cover the topic: Nutritional Foods for Growing Bodies (preschool children). Be very sure you read the Rubric before beginning this project (see below for the rubric). Some students make this mistake and leave out required items causing them to loose points unnecessarily. Here are some things to consider: The presentation is for parents, informing them about healthy and nutritional meals for their children and why it is important for optimal growth and development. You must apply the information in chapter 12-18 in addition to the other chapters we covered in the course.Be sure to review page 408 & 412 on serving/portion sizes recommended for preschool children. You will also find Chapter 16 helpful as you analyze the meals you create in your PowerPoint presentation. This is the end of the semester final project, it is an accumulation of applied knowledge from the content in the course textbook not the internet. You will find it helpful to review ChooseMYPlate in your book (Page 327 & 408, 412). This is an excellent tool to use as you analyze good, nutritious meals for preschool children. For more information, click on the blue link, ChooseMyPlate.govhttps://www.choosemyplate.gov/eathealthy/myplate-mystate/californiaHere is the link to MyPlate for Preschool children:https://www.choosemyplate.gov/browse-by-audience/view-all-audiences/children/health-and-nutrition-information/how-much-does-my-preschooler-needBe sure to discuss the nutrients the food items supply to children-(chapter 12) i.e., milk, 1/2 cup-calcium for bone growth. Keep it short and only list a few of the main nutrients so parents aren’t overwhelmed.Required components of your PowerPoint:Introduction (1-3 slides)Write an introduction to your presentation as though you are speaking to your parents. Introduce yourself, the topic and tell the parents why you are discussing nutritional and healthy foods for their parent meeting. Using information from the textbook, tell them why eating healthy is an important topic.Be sure you write as though you are standing in front of the parents and speaking to them directly. Do not speak to me, speak to the parents. Part I ~ Healthy Food Choices(8 – 10 slides) Reminder: Be sure you show a list of some food options AND you need to show two sample meals that reflect the food groups. Review pages 411 & 412 (Teachers checklist 16-1 and 16-2 ) on how to list appropriate serving sizes for the meals and for meal samples. Do not use those meal samples, but they are a good example of how your menu should look. You need to come up with your own. The Table 14-5 chart on page 374 provides good information on the functions of nutrients. This information will be helpful to you on your discussion of why the food you chose in your menu is healthy.TIP: If you have a particular food item that you don’t know what ingredients are included, Google Search the food item and ask ‘What nutrients are in _____,’ This will help you list the main nutrients in the food item you are featuring. You do not need to list every nutrient, just the main ones.BreakfastCreate slides that show healthy foods for breakfast. Start by presenting a list of healthy breakfast choices. Next, be sure to show how these choices look in at least two meal samples that covers the food groups and includes the daily recommended servings. The slides should show the parents more than one choice. Think of it as a Menu. The slides should state why the food you chose is healthy and nutritional. What are the advantages for eating the foods you chose? Example: Milk is high in calcium, which is good for bone growth and teeth development.Include a separate slide that shows unhealthy breakfast food choices. Explain to the parents why these choices are unhealthy and what is in them, or not in them, that is unhealthy. Be sure the parents know which slides indicate unhealthy choices by giving the slide a title that says, ‘Unhealthy Choices.’ Example: French fries are high in fat and salt, which can lead to hypertension later on in life.LunchCreate slides that show healthy foods for lunch. Start by presenting a list of healthy lunch choices. Next, be sure to show how these choices look in at least two meal samples that covers the food groups and includes the daily recommended servings. The slides should show the parents more than one choice. The slides should state why the food you chose is healthy and nutritional. What are some of the main nutrients and how do they help the child? What are the advantages for eating the foods you chose?Include a slide that shows unhealthy lunch food choices. Note: Do not show the healthy food options AND the unhealthy food options on the same slide or you may confuse parents. Explain to the parents what is in these foods that are unhealthy. Be sure the parents know which slides indicate unhealthy choices by giving the slide a title that says, ‘Unhealthy Choices.’DinnerCreate slides that show healthy foods for dinner. Start by presenting a list of healthy dinner choices. Next, be sure to show how these choices look in at least two meal samples that covers the food groups and includes the daily recommended servings. The slides should show the parents more than one choice. The slides should state why the food you chose is healthy and nutritional. What are the advantages for eating the foods you chose and what are a few main ingredients that is beneficial to the child?Include a slide that shows unhealthy dinner food choices. Explain to the parents what is in these foods that make them so unhealthy. Be sure the parents know which slides indicate the unhealthy choices by giving the slide a title that says, ‘Unhealthy Choices.’Part II ~ Healthy Snacks (4-6 slides)First Section:Create slides that show healthy snacks for preschoolers and explain why these are healthy.Create slides that show unhealthy snacks for preschoolers and explain why these choices are unhealthy for children. Be sure to title the slide ‘Unhealthy Choices.’State why it is important to eat healthy snacks. Be sure to tell parents what the main nutrient is in that food that is beneficial to children. Ex: chicken is an important protein needed to ……..Second Section:Create a slide with a healthy snack recipe that a parent can make with their child. The recipe should be simple enough so the child can be involved, but also has enough for the child to do so they are able to participate. If it is too simple, or too difficult, children will not be able to participate much in the process. The slide should state suggestions as to how the child can assist the parent with the recipe. Parents can do the things that might not be safe, such as cook on the stove, or cut up difficult things. Children can help to put things in the blender under parental supervision, or even cut up easy things as a banana with a dull butter knife, under supervision.State why it is good for children to be involving in making their snacks.Be sure the recipe is age appropriate for a preschooler to do. Overall Components of the presentation:Title Page (include your name)Introduction to parentsHealthy and Unhealthy Food Choices for Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerHealthy and Unhealthy SnacksHealthy Snack Recipe Requirements: Presentation should be interesting and appealing for parents to view. You will need pictures as well as words to illustrate healthy and unhealthy choices. You can Google search to find these free pictures that you can copy and paste into your PowerPoint. Don’t go overboard with too many pictures. Just a few should do it.Be sure to create enough slides so there is enough information for parents. You must state why food is healthy or unhealthy and what the food’s nutritional value (or lack of value) is for the child. Each food category (breakfast, lunch, dinner) should be on separate slides.Snacks are a separate section (Part 2).Be sure the unhealthy food choices follow the healthy food choices for each category. Do not group everything together or parents may get confused. You must put the presentation in the order above (under components). This will be an uploaded assignment. Save your presentation as a ppt or pptxwithin PowerPoint.Use information from the textbook, not the internet (except for ChooseMyPlate if you wish more information-see link above). You do not need to include citations.Reread each section and the rubric below to be sure you understand what is being asked; read the entire section, not just the bullet items.Remember you are speaking to the parents of the children in your classroom.Check for grammar, spelling, formatting and presentation. You don’t want parents to see your spelling errors! Believe me it is embarrassing….it’s happened to me so I know!Check that you completed all sections and included everything that is required for each section.Review the Rubric below to ensure you meet expectations. Here is an example of a PowerPoint presentation I designed that will show you how to get started and what you need for each slide. This example reflects the instructions above and the rubric.
