The text emphasizes the devastation that World War 1 and World War 2 had on the Earth by stating, “the consequences of both were so great that the world has still not recovered from them.” Technology gave people a new way in which to approach war that caused the kind of devastation that had never been seen before. People often associate a direct loss of lives via combat with war, but there were effects like the resulting Depression and Holocaust that would lead to countless more deaths. One of the earlier scenes in Regeneration exposes viewers to some of the struggles that soldiers were facing because of the war. We hear about how a man in the hospital encountered a body and was “thrown into the air and landed headfirst. The stomach burst, and there he was headfirst. There he was with his head inside the corpse and mouth full of rotten flesh.” That certainly paints a bleak picture of death everywhere with the man facing mental and physical distress as a direct result of war. Those responsible for treating the men were also directly affected. Viewers can see the morbid and slow progression soldiers often dealt with.While the text paints a broad picture, the films give insight into some of what was felt directly by those involved with the wars. An interesting theme that is seen throughout All Quiet on the Western Front is how many men were originally fueled by patriotism that quickly becomes irrelevant when faced with the real horrors of war. The number of men actually returning from war is dismal. Similar to what is seen throughout Regeneration, there is a constant mental struggle faced by men returning from war. Discussions heard throughout All Quiet on the Western Front reflect some of what is read throughout the text concerning leadership. Soldiers question who is responsible for war and who should really be fighting. They question what humanity really is and what makes people different from others. The physical anguish faced by the characters like amputation and various hospitalizations rival their mental anguish.2.The different parts of the books present an understanding of the events that occurred during World War I and World War II. The two books document how the rulers used their dominance to influence policies and necessitate for the killings of those who opposed their rules. Chapter 34 in the Fiero text discusses various issues, such as the filming of the Holocaust. The chapter documents the use of visual arts in the documentation of terror during the Holocaust. For example, the chapter presents the concentration camps in Paris, which were used to exterminate the rebels against the Nazi regime. Due to the information presented by the chapter, I can configure the events that ensued in World War I and World War II.I think Lewis’ Milestone’s film ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’ also plays an important role in understanding the horrors of World War I and World II due to the war events documented in the film. The film based on a war set up is dominated by murders and the death of soldiers as they pursue their economic and political freedom. That makes one understand the numerous deaths that occurred during the two notable world wars. During the struggle, most soldiers lost their lives in their commitment to pursue victory. The war fields later became quiet after the death of the soldiers. That is symbolically represented in the film.Lastly, it would also be prudent to assert that MacKinnon’s film Regeneration also plays a significant role in understanding the role of leaders in influencing policies that led to wars. Notably, the film acts as a precursor to understanding the death of most soldiers that participated in World War I and World II.
